Philanthropy is a complex and nuanced art

Rather than just giving charity to the poor on an ongoing basis, philanthropy aspires to do something more lasting and radical, according to Peter Frumkin in this book. Philanthropy allows donors to use private funds to create social and political change, or locate and support important social innovations, or achieve a small measure of equity through the simple redistribution of resources.

The act of giving inevitably raises questions of effectiveness, accountability and legitimacy. Effectiveness depends on the extent of the donor's success in achieving their goals. Accountability is a complex matter because giving is often done in private, but this may make the process non-transparent to many different stake-holders who are affected by the results of the giving. Legitimacy involves the difficult question of whether anyone has the right to complain about how donors spend their own money, or alternatively whether wealthy people should be allowed to exercise power on their own pet projects in an undemocratic manner.

The author discusses ways in which philanthropic value is created, theories of change, leverage and scale, different styles of giving, short-term versus long-term giving, different types of foundations and vehicles through which philanthropy can be conducted, and ways in which the strategic value of giving can be maximised.

The book is likely to be of interest to anyone who wants to make a difference in the world through giving, but has encountered at least one situation in which the outcome of giving has not matched up to the expectation. While giving at first seems to be a straightforward matter of handing over money, philanthropy is in fact a complex and nuanced art that requires a great degree of research and strategic thinking if you want to maximise the effectiveness of your efforts. I highly recommend this book as the best one on the subject that I am aware of.

Useful framework for those concerned about their giving's effectiveness

I found this book helpful for framing various considerations in how to make giving more strategic. The vast majority of books out there are targeted to those with substantial means only. This book is more accessible to those having more modest resources, though not exclusively so.

For me, I found the topic of timing donations to be the most enlightening, though I would guess any single donor might find any of the five primary concerns as instructive depending on where they are in their giving concerns.

Overall, this was worth the read and adds something important to the resources on giving available.

Good introductory treatment, but has some issues

This book has two principal aims. In the first half of the book, the aim is the study of discrete time and continuous time Markov chains. The first part of the text is very well written and easily accessible to the advanced undergraduate engineering or mathematics student.

My only complaint in the first half of the text regards the definition of continuous time Markov chains. The definition is introduced using the technical concepts of jump chain/holding time properties. This doesn't tie out well with the treatment of the discrete time case and may seem counter-intuitive to readers initially. However, the author does establish the equivalence of the jump chain/holding time definition to the usual transition probability definition towards the end of Chapter 2.

The second half of the text deals with the relationship of Markov chains to other aspects of stochastic analysis and the application of Markov chains to applied settings.

In Chapter 4, the material takes a serious jump (explosion?) in sophistication level. In this chapter, the author introduces filtrations, martingales, optional sampling/optional stopping and Brownian motion. This is entirely too ambitious a reading list to squeeze into the 40 or so pages allocated for all of this, in the opinion of this reviewer. The author places some prerequisite material in the appendix chapter.

Chapter 5 is a much more down-to-earth treatment of genuine applications of Markov chains. Birth/Death processes in biology, queuing networks in information theory, inventory management in operations research, and Markov decision processes are introduced via a series of very nice toy examples. This chapter wraps up with a nice discussion of simulation and the method of Markov chain Monte Carlo.

If the next edition of this book removes chapter 4 and replaces it with treatment of an actual real-world problem (or two) using genuine data sets, this reviewer would be happy to rate that edition 5 stars.

Unique but poorly written

This is a unique book that bridges the gap between undergraduate and graduate treatment but only in the first three chapters. It does require a number of preparatory courses, from multivariate calculus, linear algebra, differential equations to solid understanding of at least undergraduate level of probability, preferable something like Williams' "Probability with Martingales" which Norris seems to refer to. In the United States this is a preparation that is available only in elite schools as many do not even require differential equations for mathematics major while probability is indeed a rare feat to see in mostly pathetic US undergraduate math curricula.

Unfortunately the book is not well written and that is the main reason why it is not more popular than it is. The text beyond first three chapters is largely useless and hard to sort out, with very little care about readability.

There are moments in the text when the author assumes his reader is quite telepatic as some proofs are rather sketchy, and some are even erroneous. Given the first edition that is forgivable although fairly annoying on occasion. The book also contains quite a few misprints adding to confusion. In its scope, the Chapter 1 on discrete Markov Chains is charming, rigorous, and accessible. I have not seen elementary Markov Chains treatment with such a solid level of rigor. Intuition is paired with precise proofs. Chapter 2 on the other hand is somewhat strange and too lax but with important treatment of special cases of Markov Processes to motivate the theory with the main result of definition of continuous Markov Chain. Prior to that the author has chosen "holding times - jump process" presentation which is intuitivelly easier to understand although the definition itself is more intricate. Unfortunately, the author failed to prove the equivalence of the definition with the standard "transition probabilities" definition since the only place he proves "Strong Markov Property" is in the appendix where he made a whole sorry mess with erroneous proofs of lemmas leading to the theorem. The chapter 2 is supposed to strengthen the basic understanding and, in my view, it does that well. Proofs are sometimes sketchy and require considerable work to decipher through. For example Theorem 2.8.6 is appealing to Lemma 2.8.5 while it actually uses different fact that is never proven. It looks like Norris is not aware of that in his sloppiness. I've found myself hard to believe in that proof so me and my colleague have proven theorem using a different deduction. Only at the very end of the chapter the author returns to appropriate precision. Continuous treatment of main results in Chapter 3 is somewhat lacking precision as well, plenty of messy proofs there, in particular conditional probabilities are treated too intuitive. For example stopping time sigma algebra is never properly introduced even though it was used in statements of few propositions with reference to stopped variables (in Chapter 2) but without any precision.

I would assume this book is beneficial for the introductory graduate course on stochastic processes and Markov Chains although not more than that. That is for the first 3 Chapters. As short as it is, it is a good alternative for one semester course.

I am not so sure what is the purpose of the 4th Chapter as it is insufficient to be serious enough. It is rather poorly written appealing on intuition and lacking precision. The mortal flaw of the whole chapter is that the author uses terms that are never defined, proofs that are sketchy appealing on intuition, and to top that off the senseless notation is just relentless, the same continues in Chapter 5. The end of the section on Brownian motion is a classic example of a largely useless text that is only readable by the author himself. The whole chapter is probably some of the worst math writing I have seen in probability texts though there is no shortage of rather bad publications. Any reader would be served the best to avoid the whole Chapter 4 as it requires disproportionate time to read it given meager benefits of learning anything from it. Chapter 5 on applications suffers again from casual and sketchy writing with little care about presentation. Even though it presents the read with valuable examples, for example very nice applications in Queuing Theory, it is probably not worth the effort to read. It is full of tough misprints that make it very hard to read, for example upside down fraction in description of Hastings Algorithm. Since it is largely irrelevant for those going into any specialized direction given how sketchy it is, it can be easily discarded until Norris makes a more consistent presentation, perhaps in the second edition.

Make no mistake, this BOOK REQUIRES GRADUATE LEVEL OF MATURITY as far as most of math majors in US go. I do not see any undergraduate beside exceptionally gifted ones to be able to read this text. The reader is expected to fill in many gaps in proofs. Take a look at the theorems 3.5.3 and 3.5.6. Everything is correct there but sloppiness of presentation creates a mess pretty hard to read. In the proof of 3.5.3 there is a reference on Fubini while in fact the proof goes by conditioning expectation. In 3.5.6 bunch of (correct) facts are thrown at the reader with a showel and without any regard for clarity of presentation. One would not expect that from a textbook.

Also on the negative side, measure theoretic aspect is sketchy/ambiguous/insufficient, the short appendix is not a great help for the same reasons including few confusing errors that should be embarrassing to the author. The editors have not done a good job of removing misprints. There are plenty of those, this is already a staple of poor editing in Cambridge Press publications, some are obvious but some are difficult to spot making already sketchy presentation by the author hard to decipher. Case in point - try to find a misprint on the 4th line of page 187.

This book needs to be rewritten and author ought to chose what level of rigor/intuition he wants throughout the whole text instead of changing the approach from chapter to chapter. If he choses to omit important deductions then he should have 0 misprints. Nevertheless this is a charming and serious book though it could have been written significantly better than it is. Given that nowadays we, the readers that is, are putting up with all sorts of rather slopy textbooks this is not so bad given the first edition.

Very useful if you have a good mathematical background!

I found this book very useful for a better comprehension of Markov chains and for understanding the theory, but you need a very good knowledge of mathematics like calculus, matrix, differential equations and statistics in order to keep going in your reading. Don't expect full numerical examples, be ready for demostrations! I recommend it for students interested in stochastic processes or looking a good approach to the basis of Markov processes.

I have been waiting for this book to come out since I read the first three. I read it all within two hours because I couldn't put it down. Now again I will have to wait to see if there is a next installment which hopefully there will be. Love this series.

Very sophisticated writing for a young teen book-thank you Kathryrn Lasky! My daughter and I started reading this series when she was 13. She is 17 now and both of us are impressed by the way Mrs. Lasky has interwoven history, suspense, romance, drama, and folklore into an outstanding series! This last book is violent but overall the series has very little suggestive material - another plus in this area of young teen novels. Thank you, thank you, thank you - we need more reading material like this...

I enjoyed reading "The Crossing

I enjoyed reading "The Crossing." It ended in such a way that you can expect a fifth book. The continuation of the three mermaids stories in this book shows the struggles they have. Lucy, Hannah, and May have the struggle of choosing between land and sea. There are greater struggles as well, one of them being life threatening. In all it was a good book. I will look forward reading the next book.

As a therapist, I'm constantly looking out for helpful resources for clients. This book has quickly been added to my list. It so clearly explores the seven most common--and inevitable, if you're human!--psychological injuries and then provides specific "first aid" treatments for each:

1. Rejection--The emotional cuts and scrapes of daily life
Description:
Rejections can inflict four distinct emotional wounds, each of which might require some from of emotional first aid: lingering visceral pain, anger and aggressive urges, harm to self-esteem, and damage to feeling that we belong. (p. 17)
Treatments:
* Argue with self-criticism
* Revive your self-worth
* Replenish feelings of social connection
* Desensitize yourself

2. Loneliness--Relationship muscle weakens
Description:
Loneliness makes us constantly on guard, prepared for the disappointment and rejection we are sure will come. As a result, we miss opportunities to make social connections and behave in ways that push others away. (p. 53)

* Identify your self-defeating behaviors
* Take on the other person's perspective

5. Rumination--Picking at emotional scabs
Description:
In order to break the self-reinforcing nature of ruminative thoughts and allow our wounds to heal, we must interrupt the cycle of rumination once it gets triggered, and we should weaken the urge to ruminate at the source by diminishing the intensity of the feelings that fuel it. We must also make efforts to monitor our relationships and to ease the emotional burden we might be placing on loved ones. (p. 154)

6. Failure--Emotional chest colds become psychological pneumonias
Description:

Because much of the anxiety associated with failures can build upon itself, it is best to be prudent and apply psychological first aid treatment as soon as possible after meaningful or bothersome failures occur. Practical and completely achievable advice for handling emotional injuries

I love how this book 1) acknowledges that we need to address our emotional wounds with they happen and 2) uses practical examples and gives tangible step-by-step instructions to help deal with emotional injuries. It's not another book that leaves you with a stack of ways you *should* think and *should* react. Instead, you give it a read to learn the science -- then keep it handy (like a medicine cabinet) for when an injury happens. I've read somewhere around 10 books in this genre and this one by far stands out as the most practical and achievable guide to emotional health.

A significant book, provides actionable tips and contributes to de-stigmatizing psychological challenges

I became curious about Dr. Winch's work after hearing his TED talk, where he spoke with passion and compassion about his vision for a future where people know as much about tending to their emotional and mental health as to their physical health. The world presents more complex (and interesting) challenges today than ever before. The more we can acknowledge the universality of psychological challenges such as rejections, failures and loneliness, the better we can find ways to manage them together.

As someone who appreciates learning materials that are easy to apply and reuse, I love the book for its structured, clear and actionable content. Dr. Winch effectively uses anecdotes from his practice to illustrate how to apply the various techniques.

The methodologies are demonstrated through the use of applications of interest to industrial engineers, including those involving product mix optimization, supplier selection, distribution center location and transportation planning, resource allocation and scheduling of a medical clinic, staffing of a call center, quality control, project management, production and inventory control,and so on. Specifically, industrial engineering problems are structured as classical problems in multiple criteria decision analysis, and the relevant methodologies are demonstrated.

About the Author

Gerald W. Evans is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Louisville (UL). His research and teaching interests lie in the areas of multiciteria decision analysis, simulation modeling and analysis, optimization, logistics and project management.

Dr. Evans received his BS in Mathematics in 1972, his MS in Industrial Engineering in 1974, and his PhD in Industrial Engineering in 1979, all from Purdue University.

Dr. Evans has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on over $3 million of funded research from organizations such as the National Science Foundation, the Defense Logistics Agency, NASA, the National Institute for Hometown Security, Louisville Metro Government, General Electric, and United Parcel Services among other organizations. In addition, he has consulted in the areas of simulation modeling and analysis, project management, and economic analysis for a variety of organizations.

He has published approximately 100 papers in various journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Evans has received the Fellow Award and the Operations Research Division Award from IIE, the Moving Spirit Award from INFORMS for his work with the UL INFORMS Student Chapter, the Dean's Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching; and he was a University of Louisville nominee for Outstanding Faculty of Adult Learners for Kentuckiana Metroversity Inc. He is listed in American Men and Women of Science, Who's Who in Engineering, and Who's Who in America.

I Missed This Type of Julie Cannon Writings!

Excellent! I read it in one Day. I loved the dynamic of these characters. I haven't enjoyed a Julie Cannon book since Come and Get me. It had me enchanted from the beginning to the end: funny, smart, and interesting characters. The only thing I wished was that this book had an epilogue or longer. I really wanted to see more. Thanks for this writing Julie I hope that you write more like this. If you haven't read a Julie Cannon book in awhile and want what you got in Come and Get Me you will find it here. I will admit that Come and Get me topped it all for me and I skipped around a bit with her other books because a few fell off for me but this book comes in a close second for me to Come and Get Me. MUST READ!!!!

When I wrote this story, I wanted to communicate something of the wonder of Christmas. I also wanted to engage and relate to the younger child. I think the `rebel donkey' character enabled me to do this.

I hope children and adults alike who read this book will get a taste of how good God is, and of how much potential there is inside of us - no matter how inadequate we may feel. I also hope they will be reminded of what a powerful tool encouragement is in when it comes to shaping the lives of our little ones.

Inspiring and Motivational for All Ages

We LOVED this story. What a delightful children's book! I found so much intriguing about this book.

The story is about a little donkey who is very stubborn and lazy. He doesn't want to do any work so when people come by to hire a donkey he does everything in his power to make sure they don't pick him. One day a man comes by that isn't swayed by the little donkey's tactics, and asks his owner how much. Being so fed up that the donkey is basically useless the owner laughs and just gives him to the man. To the donkey's dismay he is taken to start his journey. He sees the load he is suppose to carry is a very pregnant woman, and he tries again to get out of this hard work ahead of him.
However the woman treats his stubbornness with kindness and offers him a treat. This seems to calm the donkey a bit and he finally acquiesces to the journey. She continues to give the donkey encouragement and praise even when he wants to give up. With every encouragement the woman gives him he pushes himself further and before they know it they reach their destination.

It's obvious that the donkey is carrying a very pregnant Mary on their journey. The most important part of this book I think, of course, is Jesus' birth taking place. But what else really touched me about this book is how if we treat unwillingness with kindness and encouragement it can actually give others motivation to want to try harder. They just need someone to believe in them. This whole book was just wonderful! One of our favorites for sure. My son is four and he can't get enough of this book. The illustrations are amazing and colorful and just so fun, the text font is really fun as well and almost resembles a young child's writing what with the large O's everywhere. I loved that this book rhymes which makes it all that more fun for children. The whole story just flowed so easily and naturally I was impressed. This book is gender neutral so both boys and girls would enjoy this book. It is not only a great read incorporating Jesus and Christian faith, but it's inspiring for all ages. I definitely recommend this book. I have no gripes whatsoever about this book, and neither does my four year old son. Everything was just amazingly put together. This book definitely makes our list of top ten favorite children's stories.

The Donkey's Path to Wisdom

Although it sounds rude to say that the story introduces a "wise ass," it is true! When we meet the donkey at the beginning of HIS story, we learn all the tricks of work avoidance ... kits will relate to him instantly!

The donkey's world is turned upside down. His owner GAVE him away, dubbing him worthless. It turns out, the donkey is going to be transportation for a woman who is pregnant. Anyone familiar with the reason for Christmas will recognize the story and it picks up a familiar theme ... while still staying in the voice of the donkey, who is much wiser and accepting of work after an angel told him just how important his task had been.

This is a delightful rendition of the Christmas Story that is accessible to very young children and great for new readers, too, through simple, expressive illustration and perfect-pitch rhyme.

A stubborn-donkey perspective on the nativity

This book is about a donkey. It's a Bible story. The most meaningful part was about Jesus - when He was born.

I didn't like the part when it was over.

AND, I didn't like that Mary was nice to the bad donkey. You should make a donkey be good by pulling it with a rope, not by being nice to it. (leading into a long theological discussion...)

What Mom Liked:

This is a seriously sweet, whimsical, humorous, meaningful book.

*A GREAT read-aloud! The rhyming is fun and flows, and we are awesome "e-Or"-ers here!
*Fun illustrations. Just adorable (thought gender-neutral). The font fits the illustrations perfectly. And the text/illustration mix (less words on some pages than others, etc.) adds to the read-aloud fun.
*Easy to relate to. What kid isn't a little self-centered, stubborn, and bratty at times, trying to get out of doing chores etc. etc.?!
*Sweet message. Yes, it's the message of Christ's birth. But the stubborn-donkey perspective adds another dimension. Kindness transforms. God uses the unlikeliest of us. God makes the impossible possible. The lessons aren't spelled out, but lay the groundwork for meaningful discussion.

About the Author
Mehdi Setareh is Professor of Architecture/Engineering in School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Polytechic Institute. His research and teaching interests include virtual environment assisted structural analysis and design; vibration problems in building structures; floor vibrations; and new methods of teaching technical courses to architects and engineers. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Robert Darvas is Professor Emeritus in the School of Architecture and Design, University of Michigan. He has held academic and professional positions in Hungary, the UK, and the USA, and has professional licenses in nine states in the US. Founder and Principle Engineer at Robert Darvas Associates, Professor Darvas' firm has completed hundreds of structural engineering project in the US including buildings at the University of Michigan and Duke University.
