Challenge and Response

I first became acquainted with the name of Arnold Toynbee through reading the science fiction of Arthur C. Clarke. Later, I saw references to him in Heinlein and Poul Anderson, and decided to see what it was all about. This book was worth reading. Toynbee's thesis is that all societies rise and fall through a process of "challenge and response."
As long as a society is growing, encountering new challenges, overcoming them, and moving on to other challenges, it is healthy. He also describes the "dominant minority," "external proletariat," and "internal proletariat" groups that make up societies. For instance, to take the example of Rome, the Romans themselves were the dominant minority, whose traditions sustained the Republic and then the Empire. The internal proletariat of Rome was the Christian religion, which came to inherit the prestige of the Romans. The external minorities were the Slavic and Germanic tribes on the northern borders, which were kept at bay until the dominant minority lost its will to expand.
Toynbee does not see empires (such as the Roman Empire) or "universal states" as triumphs of a society's strength, but rather as a sign of weakness. A healthy society expands, develops creative arts, and encourages social mobility; an empire has rigid rules of conduct, laws, and social hierarchy. Toynbee's thesis is an excellent primer for understanding history, and can easily be applied to today's societies, including ours. He offers many different examples of growing, static, and declining societies, and shows an incredible mastery of his subject.
Now the bad news: This is dry, tough reading. There are no maps, no visuals, and few "helps" for people unfamiliar with world history. Toynbee wrote for a scholarly audience, and assumed everyone reading would know what he was talking about. Toynbee also has a streak of racism that most clearly comes across in his discussion of Africa. He does not even deem African civilizations in his text, and decries the influence of "African rhythms" on Western culture (jazz, at the time of his writing). You've got to really like history to get into this stuff, but there are some profound things in Toynbee's work, which can make you look seriously at who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.

A Study of History is an excellent, lifetime study of how and why civilization progresses through time. Written in 1939, Toynbee predicts the rise of nationalism, the fall of the USSR, and victory of capitalism, and the enormous growth of Western culture. His central theme is simple yet true: civilizations advance by overcoming outside challenges and internal stagnation. Read this once per lifetime.

Toynbee's comparative analysis of the birth life and decline of civilizations is an enlightening masterwork. The corrolations we can draw from history and apply to our own individual development are mind-blowing. A must have in hardback for any library. Takes awhile to work through, but high value added from the experience.

Easy to follow, good examples, and comprehensive coverage of subject.I still consider this the best text on the market for our undergraduate students.

About the Author
Nicholas J. Garber is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia where he has been a member of the faculty since September of 1980. Before joining the University of Virginia, Dr. Garber was a Professor of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Sierra Leone, where he was also the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. At the State University of New York at Buffalo, he played an important role in the development of the graduate program in Transportation Engineering. For several years, he was a design engineer for consulting engineering firms in London, and also worked as an Area Engineer and Assistant Resident Engineer in Sierra Leone.

Lester A. Hoel is the L.A. Lacy Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Engineering and the Director of the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Virginia. He held the Hamilton Professorship in Civil Engineering from 1974-99. From 1974-89 he was Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. Previously he was Professor of Civil Engineering and Associate Director, Transportation Research Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and on the faculty at San Diego State University. He also was principal engineer with Wilbur Smith and Associates and visiting professor at the Norwegian Technical University and the University of California at Irvine and a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley.

Very comprehensive and well written

As the transportation professor at West Virginia University, I take issue with the review from Braxton Lewis (one of my former students). This book does not have errors and we have been using it at West Virginia University for 12 years and will continue to do so.

The book covers all the major concepts needed to prepare students for advanced courses in transportation. Each chapter is well-written and gives just the right level of detail and technical content.

One very nice feature is that the book includes the charts, tables, etc from the desigh guides where appropriate. This way, the concepts are presented cleanly without students having to fumble through the various codes and design guides as they try to learn the concepts.

Best ICS resource yet!

Without a doubt, this is the best ICS resource yet! The Guide clearly reflects years (decades!) of field experience - offering not only checklists of "what" needs to be done, but provides insightful guidelines on "how." It has tons of helpful checklists and diagrams, making it an easy-to-use, quick reference. I've been using ICS since 1991 - I wish I had this handbook when I first started my emergency response career. Highly recommend this valuable jobaid.

All Hazard Field Guide

This is such a good book and so easy to carry and reference in all emergency response situations. The checklists are helpful so nothing is missed, and the book provides guidelines for setting up briefings including the agenda, room, handouts and AV as well as lessons learned. The Operations Section Chief guides are outstanding and I got a lot out of each of the books chapters. There is so much good information here and its easy to locate and reference. I highly recommend this book to emergency responders but as well to anyone that likes to be organized in their daily work life.

Great!... But where's the other one?

If you've played any of the Fighting Fantasy books before, I'll have you know that Clash of the Princes is one of the best in the series, and it surprises me that it was so difficult to find. It's not for beginners, mind you; if you're interested in the format I'd recommend you'd start at the beginning of the series with `Warlock of Firetop Mountain' or `Citadel of Chaos'. Clash of the Princes is one of the cleverer and more sophisticated in the series. Somebody, though, seems to have missed the point - that this is a two-book game! Only one, The Warlock's way, is to be found on Amazon. The Warrior's Way is nowhere to be seen (though the two of them can be obtained through the Fighting Fantasy homepage, FightingFantasy.com. Though it can certainly be played by itself as a single player game, what makes Clash of the Princes unique and exciting is that it can be played by two players at the same time - the book uses a very clever system that keeps the two players in unison. Though I doubt many children nowadays would have the patience and the imagination to play these books (why should they, when computer gaming is so sophisticated?) this two-part game is very fun and unique, and is worth owning - if you can find the other part!

Excellent Service Dog Training Book & Precious Resource!

Teamwork II is a great book for training your own service dog. In fact, this book and it's predecessor are the only ones I have found on this topic. Using today's progressive positive reinforcement (operant conditioning) techniques to train dogs, this book is a priceless resource for those that can't use typical training methods to train their dog and need their dog to do more than typical sit, stay, and down. For those of us that can't run backward to teach our dog to come and need a dog that can dependably complete more complex tasks, such as bringing the phone, helping to get dressed and undressed, or providing support and preventing a fall, this book is the answer!

This book is actually written using the real experiences of other people that have self-trained their own assistance dogs and provides their techniques and solutions to training the various behaviors. It is based completely on real-world experiences and exercises, which makes it not only very understandable and broken down well but also gives it the credibility of being tried and true solutions to problems encountered by those of us that have various physical disabilities.

Teamwork II can be used without reading Teamwork I and as a stand alone; however, it only covers the actual assistance behaviors. The groudwork and basic training needed before reaching this level is covered fully in the first volume. While it would be helpful if there were more books dedicated to this subject, of not only training service dogs but geared toward the self-training of service dogs, this book definitely meets and exceeds that need!

I would recommend this book as a must read to those that are disabled and self-training their own service dog as well as to those interested in training service dogs and/or already training them. I think this book also will give those people devoted to the training of service dogs invaluable insite into the needs of the people they are trying to help, as well as a good perspective of the wide range of disabilities and their limitations that the dogs will need to be responding to and helping to mitigate. With the ever expanding need for service dogs and the constant and growing gap of meeting that need, more and more people will be needing to train their own and are rising to that task, and this book is a necessary and vital tool for meeting that need.

Team Work 2

While I was visiting my local library the libraian happened to mention this book to me, noticing that my siezure alert dog is fairly young. He turned 2 at the end of May 2006 and is sometimes resistant to comands in public such as :"relax" or "down" which means lay down on the floor and wait quietly. So It ended up that I couldn't get the book from the library because it was more like a text book, I tried to get it from a local Barne's and Nobles but was told they couldn't guarantee delivery, so I turned to Amazon.com.

I recieved the book in about a week and have been working with it, and my dog. It has helped us overcome training snafus such as backing up under a restraunt table because it is "unnatural" for dogs to back in, and unusual for them to have the room to go in forward and turn around. "Tuck" your tail has also been a useful command helping me teach my dog to be safe in the car when closing the door, or at checkout lanes in the grocery store.

The book has also been helpful in educating the public including some medical professionals who had not been aware of "alternative therapies" such as the use of a service dog. This combined with the laws of the ADA found on the dept of justice website, helped me feel more confident in facing other's adversity towards my dog and me working as a team.

My dog has been instrumental in allowing me to do things without worrying i'm going to have a siezure, or fall out. The book Team work 2 has cemented things I already knew about training but offered other examples of how other teams overcame their training roadblocks.

It is fair to say you must most often start training your dog for these purposes at a young age to have the most positive effect on the outcome.

Well Written

I am training a sheltie puppy to be a service dog for my daughter and with 35 professional years in dogs I want to buy the best book available to help me achieve this task. Teamwork 2 does go back to the original book often, Teamwork, but the information in the book is solid, easy to understand and easier yet to apply to training a calm, focused dog to do effective service work. Thank you Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelley.
