The Stock Trader's Almanac is a staple for any trader - it will make for a more profitable year ahead.

I haven't finished reading the Stock Trader's Almanac for 2017 but feel inclined to give it 5 stars based on the 49 editions which came before it. Like the farmers almanac (I'm from Iowa) gives the farmer information that pertains to his or her trade the Stock Trader's Almanac gives those in the stock market valuable information that pertains to trading stocks. Simple right? Well, a lot of statistics were used in putting this book together, which is the most profitable day of the week to trade, when are the triple witching days, what are the 10 best or 10 worst days or weeks, months or quarters by percent and point, what are the 3 most profitable months of the year, and with an election year - based on how the market has acted the first half of the year who will be the next president.

Well worth reading before the start of 2017 - read it well and you will most likely be rewarded with better gains for 2017 than you had the previous year!

Although he is mostly remembered for his part in the campaign in Italy from 1943 to 1945, Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring was also chief of staff of the Luftwaffe in 1936-37, playing a crucial role in the shaping of the service for the coming war. As commander of Luftflotte 1 in Poland and Luftflotte 2 in France and the Low Countries, he was responsible for supporting the armoured spearheads of the German Army as they undertook their Blitzkrieg campaigns. With the Fall of France, the Battle of Britain began and Luftlotte 2 was the main force in the air attack against the British air defences, with Kesselring planning many raids. Following the war Kesselring was tried and convicted of war crimes following a number of massacres of civilians in Italy. He was sentenced to death, later commuted to life imprisonment before being released on the grounds of ill health in October 1952. Here Pier Paolo Battistelli provides a detailed study of one of the most famous German commanders of World War II.

About the Author
Pier Paolo Battistelli earned his PhD in Military History at the University of Padua. A scholar of German and Italian politics and strategy throughout World War II, he is active in Italy and abroad writing titles and essays on military history subjects. A contributor to the Italian Army Historical Office, he is currently revising his PhD thesis for publication: The War of the Axis: German and Italian Military Partnership in World War Two, 1939-1943.

Decent succinct introduction but does not really capture Kesselring's command style and its strengths and weaknesses

Any introduction of this book would have to start with a few comments on what the Osprey Publishing House's "Command" series, of which this book is a part, is and is not. These books are 64 pages in length, a third of which consists of illustration. Needless to say, anyone looking for an encyclopedic history of any subject in terms of biography (i.e., who is this man), history or even the narrower topic of military strategy would be sorely disappointed. The books in this series are only intended to touch the surface by providing a very rudimentary introduction to the subject that can be read in about an hour and a half or so. For those seeking a much lengthier (and more serious) history and analysis of Kesselring this is not the book. Unfortunately, at least as of September 2012, there is really no independent book that really delves into Kesselring. The two leading (and best books) are Kesselring's own memoirs and Kenneth Macksey's "Kesselring: German Master Strategist of the Second World War" (Published by Greenhill). Unfortunately the former is quite self-serving while the latter is not very deep in terms of its analysis, despite its approximately 250 page length. This is definitely a gap that, hopefully, will eventually be filled but for the time being exists. The relevant question, regarding the Osprey "Command" series book on Kesselring is, does the book, given its format, do an adequate job in examining Kesselring's military career and style of command (along with weaknesses and strengths)? The answer is that it is very mixed. On the one had it provides a succinct and decent introduction to the Kesselring's military career but, on the other, does not provide a decent analysis if his command style (especially in regard to its uniqueness) as well as its strengths and weaknesses.

On the positive side, the book provides a decent history of Kesselring's military career. It starts off with the fact that he came from a non-military family background and rapidly progressed up the ranks before the start of the First World War (very rare), his career during world war one (with almost no front line experience - again quite rare among officers who progressed in the post war period and in WWII), his technical background between the wars and his various commands during the second world war (i.e., lower countries, during Battle of Britain, short experience on Eastern front, Southern Command in Italy and Africa and eventually on the Western front a few months before the war ended). Unfortunately, due to very short length of the book, we obtain a too short history of these (other than Southern) Commands. This is particularly true in regard to his command on the Eastern Front. Also absent is a serious discussion of how Kesselring was able to move up so quickly before the war broke out.

In addition, the book does not discuss how his command style was unique in any way. Dr. Battistelli claims that Kesselring suffered from undue optimism in his strategic plans in Italy and bowing to Hitler's will in permitting Rommel to advance in Africa over capturing Malta first. With respect to his strategic defensive plans in Italy (i.e., defending Italy far south and retreating Northward over time instead of moving immediately to Alps), Dr. Battistelli claims this was optimistic on Kesselring's part (due to an overestimate of allied capabilities?) but did it not make sense, despite the risks, for the Germans to tie down so many allied troops and resources with German troops (i.e., the overwhelming majority were infantry as opposed to mechanized) that could not have been used that effectively on the Eastern Front instead? Did Kesselring really have any hope of persuading Hitler to conquer Malta first before advancing in Africa? Dr. Battistelli also does not discuss how Kesselring's lack of front line combat experience impacted his decisions and command style (if at all).

In short, the book provides us with a very rudimentary overview of his military career but no insights into his command style. A good introduction touching the topic but nothing over and beyond that.

A Glimpse of Smiling Albert

Dr. Pier Paolo Battistelli's Albert Kesselring, No. 27 in Osprey's Command series, offers a succinct look at Generalfeldmarschall Albert Kesselring, one of the most unusual German commanders in the Second World War. As the author notes, Kesselring rose very rapidly in the German army, transferred to the new Luftwaffe in the 1930s and then occupied key joint-service command slots during the Second World War. Aside from his own memoirs and one dated biography in English, Kesselring hasn't been covered much in English-language history so this volume has merit. However, the 64-page format is tough to pull off (as I can attest personally, having written three previous volumes in this series) and in this case, is only a partial success. I suspect that a good amount of information that fell on the cutting room floor and the volume seemed to lack continuity at parts, which could also be indicative of too much editorial meddling. In any case, this volume is a decent introduction to Kesselring and his role in the Second World War, but essentially just scratches the surface.

Kesselring's early life and career are covered in a few pages in the introduction. One thing that struck my eye was that, "Kesselring did not serve in the trenches or even the front line [in the First World War], he was awarded the Iron Cross first and second class..." Instead, he spent much of the First World War as an adjutant in various artillery units. Afterwards, he spent much of the 1920s in Defense Ministry postings, with only minimal command time. It is also interesting that Kesselring never really served in the hardcore staff position so exalted in the German military - operations officer. When he transferred to the Luftwaffe in 1933, Kesselring continued to occupy high-level ministry positions. All this begs greater insight into Kesselring's political instincts and ability to climb the career ladder so successfully, but without the usual credentials. However, this volume provides no insight into how Kesselring achieved such rapid career success.

The author then spends a bit more space discussing Kesselring's role as Chief of Staff of the Luftwaffe and then commander of an Air Fleet in the 1939-41 campaigns. Nothing really new here. He then spent the period 1942-44 in the Mediterranean theater, where he made his most noteworthy contribution by the tenacious defense of Italy. As another reviewer noted, the volume actually says little about Kesselring's command style. A good approach might have been to zoom in on a particular battle, like Monte Cassino, and review key decisions made by Kesselring during a day or two of combat. The section on opposing commanders is little more than capsule bios, with no real comparison of how Kesselring stacked up against opponents like Harold Alexander or Mark Clark. The final section focuses heavily on Kesselring's alleged role in war crimes in Italy - thought there was a bit too much on this for a volume this size. The author only partially sums of Kesselring's individual contributions and faults, citing his excessive optimism in particular. I'm not sure that characteristic was either unique to Kesselring or necessarily pernicious. A good commander has to be optimistic even in the most critical situations; what was he supposed to do in 1943, throw up his hands and say `we're all screwed! The war is lost!' The ability of commanders like Model, Rommel and Kesselring to inspire their troops with optimism in 1944 was a critical combat multiplier for the Wehrmacht and not a fault from their point of view.

Not in synch with the rest of this series

This is the first time I have ever been disappointed in an Osprey book. First of all, the book simply serves as a resume of Kesselring, not really a discussion of his leadership style (unless "optimism" is a style) or how we was able to influence and lead his soldiers and airmen. The format is confusing. There are typos and finally one map has a key item from a completely different map. While the artwork and maps are great and the photos are good it is hard for me to recommend this book.

Mittelmark's debut spins sizable doses of sexual grotesquerie into an otherwise derivative haunted-house yarn, in which vindictive spirits loose in a smalltown house coax a family into bizarre experiments with sex, drugs and self-mutilation. Ignoring the house's macabre history, the Coulter family moves in and is immediately possessed by ravenous carnal tendencies and violent erotic visions. As the professorial father obsesses over researching the house's legacy, son Peter sheds his teenage discomfiture and plunges uncharacteristically into high school romance and hardcore drugs. Meanwhile, his sister, always the popular girl, withdraws into depression and self-infliction, her only friend a shadowy stranger that lurks in her room. While Peter unravels his family's newfound woes and the house's sinister past, flashbacks reveal the drug-fueled tale of the Vietnam-era radicals who previously fell prey to the house's will. This shocker succeeds partially as a paranormal coming-of-age tale, akin to slasher-movie parables about the dangers of sex and drugs, and may appeal to teenagers looking for a quick and digestible genre exercise. However, seasoned horror fans and attentive readers will find little to sink their teeth into, as the cookie-cutter plot speeds toward a particularly banal conclusion. (Feb.)

Smarter than your average haunted house story

This is a great read - compelling, twisted, creepy with a large dose of humor and surprising philosophical and historical insight. It moves along at a fast clip, and is actually beautifully written with sentences which just leap off the page and crisp vivid descriptions. Many lines are laugh out loud funny. The teenage characters who suddenly find themselves in a confusing, dangerous world are perfectly drawn. The drug filled flashbacks to the sixties radicals and the interweaving story of the utopian cults of the 1800's will intrigue anyone interested in history or philosophy of religion. Although it is superficially a haunted house story, much of the plot is so daringly original and bizarre that it moves well beyond the tried and true notes of the genre. While there are a few steamy, gorgeously rendered sex scenes, most notably a very sensual and emotionally laden lesbian encounter between two acid tripping college girls, much of the rest of the sex is rather sinister and dark. While this might offend a meek reader, it's not gratuitous, but rather serves to illustrate the sometimes nightmarish perils of adolescence with a lot of heart and compassion.

Nerve-shredding, well-written scare!

I've read all the modern-day "masters" of horror, and I have to say, newcomer Howard Mittelmark puts them all to shame. Age of Consent is the scariest book I've read in about twenty years--and it moves at light speed, yet still manages to be loaded with solid writing, chilling imagery, and real characters.

Mittelmark is wonderful at subtle foreshadowing. His motifs are unsettling, the use of mirrors and windows in particular a double reference to the way we see ourselves and what we believe happens to us after we die. You'll be going to bed with the shades drawn or the curtains pulled tightly closed. His imagery--not too much, not too little--is sharp and photographic.

Poe's concept of perversity has been at the root of every horror tale, and many writers today are too obvious with it. Mittelmark is the first modern writer I've read that's been able to take that concept and integrate it so well that the fourth wall is dismantled, brick by brick. Expertly, Mittelmark has shed the genre's traditional way-out characters and their extreme dysfunctions, addictions, and habits with whom the reader can't connect. The people in Age of Consent are just the people we know every day: workaholics, normal teens (who all come from relatively "normal" homes) experimenting with drugs for the first time, idealistic young adults who have natural desires to change the world, people who have sexual attractions they shouldn't.

This is going to be a very tough act to follow. If you're smart, and you want to be up for a few nights scared out of your mind, BUY THIS BOOK. I promise you won't be sorry, but I think other horror novels are going to fall flat for awhile.

Not a good book for a first time author

The book starts off slow and goes down hill from there, besides the slow pace in the story line, the author doesnt seem to seperate flashbacks from the present by using little dashes or dots to denote 'ok the story is going to jump back to the 1970's for a paragraph or two before returning to the present' which gives the reader a disjointed feeling when suddenly the story decides to do a random time shift to the past before returning to the present.

I'm sorry to have fallen for the hype about this book and actually ordered it thru amazon. I wish I had bought this at the used book store instead.

The book is slow and I'm still waiting for something exciting to happen! But I'm ready to give up on this book and I only read up to page 166 and so far.....nothing exciting happening to keep my interest.

I hope that future books written by Mr Mittelmark will pick up the pace a bit and give the readers clues on when he is going to do a time shift to the past to explain whatever needs to be explained.

I noticed that at the time of this review being written that Amazon.com is temporayly out of stock on this book. I just hope they dont restock it since they will end up spending a lot of money for something that wont sell!

THE POWER AND GLORY OF HEAVY METAL

Heavy metal music is not only defined by its look and sound, but also by the album cover art which often did as good, if not a better job, of selling the album as any other aspect. Heavy Metal Thunder from Chronicle Books takes a look at the proud and often controversial history of heavy metal album artwork. In today's world of CD's, iPods, MP3 players, and file sharing, cover art has become a relative lost art. Such was not the case twenty or twenty-five years ago as record companies and bands new the importance of producing a cover which could catch the eye of potential buyers. Having lived through the heavy metal years myself, I can truthfully admit to buying many albums based solely on the cover art, without ever having heard the band's music. Sometimes this worked out as in the cases of bands like Grim Reaper and Exciter...other times it didn't, but even if it didn't, you still had that great album cover art.

Writers James Sherry and Neil Aldis trace the history of heavy metal album art from that first, foreboding cover to Black Sabbath's first album in 1969, right up to the present say's nu-metal and black metal releases. But this isn't just 250 pages of pictures; the pair also look at the music that inspired the art and how the art was a reflection of the band's music and personality. There were the hard-edged bands like Iron Maiden , Armored Saint, Manowar, and Black Sabbath that often subscribed to the swords & sorcery/gothic approach.

Then there were the glam/hair metal bands who, more often than not, put themselves front and center on the cover, clearly trying to appeal to the female metal fans yet still reeling in the guys with sexually suggestive covers and scantily clad women. But these bands were labeled as poseurs by the more hardcore metal heads who turned their attention to speed and thrash bands like Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth, and to black metal bands like Venom and Slayer.

Some of the most notorious album covers in history wait inside the pages of Heavy Metal Thunder including Twisted Sisters "Stay Hungry" showing Dee Snider munching on a bloody leg bone, Black Sabbath's gothic "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", Carcass' disturbing "Reek of Purification" and Marilyn Manson's "Mechanical Animal". Special sections are devoted to Iron Maiden's covers depicting zombie mascot Eddie, painted by Derek Riggs.

This was like taking a stroll back in time and revisiting old friends you haven't seen in a long time. If you're a metalhead, you'll enjoy paging through the book and seeing just how many of these albums that you owned, or perhaps still own. There are literally hundreds of album covers pictured here covering every sub-genre of heavy metal including grindcore and grunge. Sometimes funny, sometimes shocking, and sometimes repulsive, Heavy Metal Thunder is a book that any metal fan must have.

A really unique and useful book!

I don't know of any other book like this. In one place you can get some of the most creative metal album covers. For example, on page 118 there is a very interesting article on Derek Riggs who did Iron Maiden's legendary album covers. There is a definite connection between the art of some of the album covers and science fiction art. Certain aspects of heavy metal are related to ancient paganism and this is reflected in the artwork of various bands. I would highly recommend this book to both metal fans and fans of science fiction art.

Terrific, compact collection of metal's best cover artwork

James Sherry and Neil Aldis have come up with a metal must-have with Heavy Metal Thunder, a collection of amazing cover artwork from some amazing metal albums. Since this is a collection of artwork and not a self-described "encyclopedia" there isn't any need to include everything, though Sherry and Aldis definitely cover the basics. From Sabbath to the NWOBHM to the hair metal era to thrash, death, black and even nu metal, Heavy Metal Thunder looks at classic imagery spanning decades, crossing national borders and covering just about every sub-genre metal has to offer (progressive and power metal are conspicuously absent). The covers included here also range from the iconic (Maiden, Priest) to the obscure (Acid Reign, Excel) to the grotesque (Cannibal Corpse, Fleshcrawl).

My only complaint - and it's more of a wish than a complaint - is that a large format version isn't available. I'd love to have seen a 13x15 hardcover book that would be a true "coffee table". This paperback is more of an "end table" book.

I'd absolutely recommend Heavy Metal Thunder to any metal fan, whether casual or utterly committed. It's just a great way to appreciate some of metal's most memorable covers.
