A Land Remembered

Thoroughly engrossing tale of Early Florida settlers and their interaction with the land.
There was so much to this story and because I live in South Florida and am familiar with many of the areas mentioned I felt a deep connection to this book.
Vast in space and time, this novel is almost epic. It will resonate with anyone interested in the early agriculture, ranching, economy and role of the railroad in South Florida's progress.
The story of the lives of the pioneers struggling to survive is woven into the land, braided with relationships with Native Americans and brought forward with concerns about the environment. Beautifully written with rich, colorful characters, this is a novel I will long remember!

A wonderful read for both kids and adults

I work with 4th grade gifted students in Delray Beach, Florida and we have read the student's edition for the last 2 years. The students get so involved in the book that we forget that it is time for lunch. My student's read in voices that take on a life of their own. The student's learn so much about Florida's history in this book that the student's parents even want to read it as well. There are some parts that can be a little disturbing for younger more sensitive readers but if you explain about the "wildness" of the times without law it can easily ease those who think it is a little rough. I used Google to show the students what some the items were that the McIvey family used and saw during those times.

I also gave this book to my father after I had been talking to him about it and he loved it. We passed the adult book around until everyone in the family had read it. We had the most wonderful family discussion about it. My mother is a true Floridian - she is 72 years old and was born and raised about 1 1/2 miles from where we both live. She remembers when some of the ruralness of Florida and this book hit home.

If there were 10 stars I would have given it 10. It is a great read for both young and old alike especially 4th graders who are doing Florida Studies which is state mandated. You learn something new each time you read it.

Smith Got it Right

As a fifth generation native, with ancestors going back to 1863 in the Florida wilderness, Smith's account tracks accurately with those stories, tales, and accounts passed down by my family, at the reunions of time gone by, as well as the memories of my youth.

The Florida Smith describes is mostly long gone now, our vast savanna replaced with the hideous glitz of tourist the tourist traps vying for a few of those last coins brought by the visitors to "The Magic Kingdom" Sea World, Universal Studios and Gator Land. All of which are run and attended by folks with no clue to the natural beauty destroyed for their entertainment and amusement. Our beaches blocked by high rise condominiums, eateries, and the ubiquitous souvenir shops with genuine, imported from China Florida, souvenirs to ship to the folks back home, or carry back on the plane to remember their vacation in the sun.

I'm old enough to remember Orlando as a citrus and cattle shipping town, our beaches were free of condos, and our waterways clear. Which makes this a bittersweet read for sure. But, an absolutely engaging one.

So for those who take for granted a two & a half hour drive from Tampa to Cape Canaveral, Smith's time capsule will take you to a time when that same trip took two weeks to a month, if you made it at all.

Well worth the investment for anyone interested in Florida History.

Pésima traducción

Fantástico contenido, pésima traducción. Verbos en tiempos equivocados, puntos y comas que no deberían de ir, oraciones que empiezan con letra minúscula. Pienso pedir en libro en inglés, pero de entrada no le recomendaría a nadie leer la versión en español, me ha dado migraña el sólo tratar de descifrar lo que dice.

El contenido es muy bueno, peligroso en las manos equivocadas ya que creo muchas de estas leyes pueden hacer mucho daño. Sin embargo, es excelente como defensa, para estar atento a ataques de otros.

Compre este libro ya que habia leido el arte de la guerra, hago un MBA y para el mundo de hoy hay que tener todas las herramientas posibles para evitar que te coman.
Algunas cosas son duras y criticables, pero esta en cada uno el aplicarlas o no, lo que yo siempre digo es que mas vale tener un arma y no usarla que tener que usarla y no tenerla.
Muy recomendable.

This monography of Tschumi is very interesting and show well the conceptual approach in his works. the design of the book is also made by Tschumi himself. We can like or don't like these esthetism, I mean the black and white pictures with low resolution. But nevertheless, this book is a full monography of all the project until the beginning of the 90's. there is a new book planned to follow this one "Event-cities 2". So I believe these two books would be good to have in your own library if you want to have a full coverage of tschumi works.

Anti-Architecture

If the architecture of Frank Gehry, has been described as a movie composed entirely of special effects, then Tschumi's is like special effects that don't quite come off. Herbert Muschamp, the modernist cheerleader who is the architecture critic for the NY Times, began his review of Tschumi's Lerner Student Center at Columbia University by saying "By now, everyone knows that Bernard Tschumi's new Lerner Hall is a dud." And City Journal described his work as ""an agitated, irrational mix of limestone, brick, metal, and glass... giving the impression of a building on the edge of a nervous breakdown." Journalist Robert Locke has written, ""Tschumi's theoretical writings, the basis of his reputation, are a tangled mess that alternately induces dizziness and puzzlement as to whether the author actually knows what philosophy is, or merely heard it described by someone in a bar once ...... The worst of this stuff is so self-evidently empty as to defy attack". - It only remains for you to ask yourself whether you are one of those fools who will be taken in by this confidence trickster who has ruined the cities we live in, or whether you will move on to more intelligent reading. [Hint: Try Louis Kahn. It's a good start!]

Best known for The Cheese and the Worms, a micro-history about a 16th-century miller with a heretical cosmology, Ginzburg has also produced masterpieces on early modern Europe and the Inquisition. Now he offers a collection (published in Italy in 1998) of nine essays that simultaneously explore history and historical pursuit, contingent as the latter is on temporal (and thereby emotional) perspective. Ginzburg, who teaches at UCLA and the University of Bologna, writes, "[F]amiliarity, which is in the last analysis bound up with cultural belonging, cannot be a criterion of what is relevant." Such expansiveness infuses his reflections on everything from the artistic device of defamiliarization ("for revitalizing our perceptions"), to different religious practices ("both the Greek reflection on myth and the Jewish prohibition of idolatry are instruments of distantiation"), to "the ambiguity of the relationship between Jews and Christians, in which closeness and distance have interlaced... for two millennia." Ginzburg masterfully incorporates ideas and passages from Tacitus and the Bible, as well as Proust, the Russian critic Viktor Shklovsky, Hume and Paul Val‚ry. Twenty-six illustrations, ranging from a carving on a Roman sarcophagus to Magritte's painting of a pipe, are used to explicate complicated ideas and passages. The reader should be forewarned: Ginzburg's scholarship is dazzling and profound. From Plato to Alan Sokal, he traverses time and space, sometimes leaving readers bewildered, awed or breathless. General readers will find Ginzburg's essays well worth their rigorous attention; historians will marvel at his skill.

About the Author

Felix Dodds is a Senior Affiliate of the Water Institute and a Senior Fellow at the Global Research Institute at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA. He is also an Associate Fellow at the Tellus Institute, and was the Executive Director of the Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future from 1992 to 2012. He is author or editor of several books on sustainable development and resource security.

Jamie Bartram is a Don and Jennifer Holzworth Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and Director of the Water Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. He is the author or editor of numerous academic papers and books, including the Routledge Handbook of Water and Heath (2015).
