Dr Iain Ferris is a professional archaeologist of thirty-five years' standing, and has taught at Birmingham and Manchester Universities. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. A TRIUMPHANT BOOK ABOUT A TRIUMPHAL MONUMENT

THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE by Iain Ferris (author of HATE AND WAR The Column of Marcus Aurelius) is an outstanding and comprehensive study of what is considered to be the last and arguably the most magnificent of Rome's triumphal monuments. The first chapter is a fine overview of the political and personal background to the life and times of Constantine and its potential relevance as to what appears on the Arch and where. Here, as is the case throughout the book, the well written text is buttressed by an abundance of detailed and clear photographs in b&w which clarify and support what is being expounded. The second chapter deals with the material fabric and achitectural/sculptural structure of the Arch as well as the significance of what is inscribed on its attic (thus the sub-title of the book: "Inspired by the Divine"). Ferris also addresses the seminal scholarship of Elizabeth Marlowe who has dealt with the Arch's place in the urban topography or Rome, possibly equal in importance to what is actually presented on the monument itself. The longtime debate about who built the Arch and when is discussed in depth; and the author comes out on the side of the generally accepted conclusion that it was indeed constructed to honor Constantine with the groundwork for it beginning in 313AD.

Additional chapters deal with the "good" emperors - Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius - and what their monuments contributed to the A of C; an in depth discussion of the various sculptural programs intentionally "inspired by the divine"; the specter and building legacy of Maxentius in Rome ("The Ghost in the Machine"); "Collage and Memory" discusses the use of "spolia" on the Arch and the reasons for the specifics of it. The subject is also treated with reference to the new capital - Constantinople (Istanbul) - of the Eastern Roman Empire and its relationship to the acquisition of "holy Christian" relics. A final chapter ("A Metaphor for Modernity") not only deals with the artistic legacy of the Arch but contains an excellent discussion and critique of Bernard Berenson's "misguided" 1954 analysis of the A of C. An Appendix, 39 color photographs, and a superb and up to date very extensive bibliography (along with notes) completes the book.

It is also the opinion of this reviewer that the Arch of Constantine should rightfully be considered both the last Pagan monument and first Christian monument above ground in the city of Rome.

About the Author
Barbara Merry is a marine rope worker with twenty years of experience in the splicing trade. Founder and owner of the Marlinspike Artist, she has worked on projects for boats of all sizes, from small traditional sailing craft and working schooners to commercial fishing vessels and U.S. Coast Guard cutters. She has taught at the Wooden Boat School and the Northeast Maritime Institute, and has written on rope and rope technology for WoodenBoat and Invention and Technology.

John Darwin is a master of rope technology and sailed in many capacities from deckhand to captain before working shoreside for a large rope manufacturer. A former rope designer, John still tests and fabricates rope.

Indispensable book for rigging

This is the best book on splicing have found. It covers wire, rope, chain, loops, eyes, stranded, and braided rope in great detail and with easy to follow instructions that will have you hanging solid load bearing rigs in no time. I got this to learn how to make slings and eye splice wire and double braided ropes for theatre rigging and acrobatic rigs. I now look at it for pretty much any rope project and use splices in place of knots and chains for most of my indoor standing rigs. All around a fantastic book for journey men riggers and scouts alike.

Not quite there

I tried to like this book, but the images and descriptions are not quite there. I sat for hours trying to interpret the words and the drawings and just could not get anything close to results. Since I couldn't get the very basic splice down, the more advanced sections were worhtless since the descriptions built upon it. I'm thinking a series of photos with clearer images would have been more useful. After my frustration with this I went to youtube and found several very short and simple video that were much clearer. I like the portablity of a book, but maybe "new mediums"are better suited for knot tying!

Good Inventory of Splices, but not how to Splice

The book is not there yet in describing how to splice. You'll be going to YouTube for the detail directions.
Having said that, the book is a good inventory of splices, the types of modern ropes and tools you'll need to make splices. By having the rope type and the name of the splice, you'll easily find several videos on how to create the splice in detail (of course finding a video that explains it well is a different challenge).
I find I'm making notes in the book after coming across a good video to update the description of the splice for future reference.
If you want an inventory of different types of modern rope and wires splices with an over of how to do it, then this is a good reference book. If you are looking for detailed directions on making splices, then I would look else where.

Valuable New information for Mediators

This newly revised edition of The Promise of Mediation offers a wealth of new information on the priniciples of transformative conflict intervention. Many readers may not be aware that the revised edition actually contains almost entirely new material, reflecting new understandings of transformative mediation that have developed since the publication of the first edition. Bush and Folger offer new specifics for practice in the transformative framework of mediation through a carefully analyzed case study, in which we can see details of the "small steps" of conflict transformation. They also discuss the impact that the transformative movement has had on the field as a whole, and debunk some common misconceptions about the transformative framework. I have especially enjoyed the last chapter, which addresses, more completely than anything in the first edition, the deep underlying values that have led to the articulation of a transformative vision for mediation, and looks at possibilities for the future of the field.

This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone interested in mediation, conflict, or just the interaction of human beings.

A Huge Step Forward in the Art and Science of Mediation

I'm grateful to the authors for the significant advance in mediation thinking that this book represents. This new edition has the potential to move the entire field toward a deeper, more powerful understanding. With the original edition, and again with this one, Bush and Folger have provided great clarity to a topic that, until now, has been muddled. While other mediators and writers succumb to the pressures of conflict and become part of the problem, these authors instruct us on how to remain true to the most important principles that lead to deep healing of human conflict. If I had the need, I would only hire a mediator who had read, studied, understood and embraced this book.

A Worthwhile Sequel

This is the follow-up to the authors' watershed first edition of the book by the same name, and contrary to the fate of most sequels, this one's really worthwhile. Indeed, it's largely a new book, rather than a mere revision; it fully updates the reader on the journey and developments in "transformative mediation" over the decade since the authors' first book with the same title was published in 1995. For anyone with an interest in the transformative model of mediation (as contrasted with, for example, facilitative or evaluative mediation), this is the best, most comprehensive, and well-written volume available.

Excellent Intro to Jim Crow for Children

Fans of illustrator Shadra Strickland know that not only does she create wonderful pictures, but she associates herself with books of the highest quality. This one is no exception.

Authors Bandy and Stein created this story from one of Bandy's childhood memories of of being prohibited from drinking from a water fountain reserved for whites only. Set in the South in the early Sixties, "White Water" tells how a young black child, Michael, hates the taste of the water from the "colored" water fountain, and becomes obsessed with finding out what "white" water tastes like. One day he manages to sneak downtown to find out. As he partakes of the forbidden fruit, which tastes as bad as the water he is allowed to drink, a white woman sees him and yells, "Boy, you know you don't belong here!" Michael, startled and afraid, falls, but then has an epiphany:

"Lying on the ground, all I could see was the pipe. I'd never seen it from that angle before. The same pipe fed both fountains! Two fountains. Two signs. But the same water in both!"

Evaluation: "The Emperor's New Clothes" has nothing on this modern version of a web of lies spun to prop up an artificial system of power, presided over by those who don't want the truth to be known. It's really a terrific book, and the warm tones of the watercolor-and-ink illustrations add to its considerable appeal. The book is intended for readers from Kindergarten to Grade 3, but I highly recommend it for all ages.

Wonderful Proof That Stories With A Lesson Can Be Fun

On a very hot day Michael takes the bus to town with his Grandma. Halfway there all Michael can think about is getting a cool drink from the water fountain. He only takes a few sips of the nasty tasting water. Next to Micheal is a boy his age taking a nice long drink from the Whites only fountain. Now Micheal wants to see for himself how refreshing and cool the White water taste .

I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed White Water. Many times historical picture books are so focused on teaching, there's little room for anything else. White Water is the best of both worlds. From the seating on the bus to the two water fountains its a good look at the segregated South. With Micheal's imagination from his army men who cover him to daydreaming in class, the story is also fun.

"After that, I couldn't concentrate anywhere, not even at school. One moment I would be in class, then suddenly, I'd be crawling on my hands and knees in the hot desert. Out of nowhere, there was a palm tree with a water fountain under it. Above the fountain was a whites only sign. I got up, opened my mouth, and was about to take a drink, when "Michael. Michael," the teacher said, "would you care to join us today?" I snapped out of it. All the kids were laughing at me."

Strickland's wonderful illustrations compliment the text beautifully. The spreads are open with very nice muted earth tones. I love Strickland's commitment to detail, from the water drops to Micheal's faithful dog. The illustrations confirm that this is a story about a boy who went on a dangerous adventure and learned a valuable lesson in the process. Textually and visually White Water simply came together very well.

On a very hot day in 1962, Michael and his grandmother take the bus into down. Once they get there, Michael runs to the water fountains to take a drink. But the water tastes nasty and dirty. He looks over at a little boy drinking out of the whites-only water fountain and sees a little boy enjoying his drink. Could the white water be better? Michael decides to find out and takes the bus to town by himself. When no one is looking, he takes a drink from the whites-only water fountain. It tastes dirty and nasty too. He happens to look down and see that both fountains are fed by the same pipe. It's the same water! The white water isn't any better. Michael wonders if that had been a lie, what other things that he's been told should he question?

I read this book to my five and seven year old boys. I think most of it went over my five year old's head but my seven year old and I were able to have a great discussion about segregation and Martin Luther King Jr.'s role in bringing that to an end. This is a great book to use as a jumping off point for discussion of race and history.

Good for what it is, but perhaps not what you really want

These books are valuable in giving you a slice of Jane's work, but as a source for information on the ships themselves, there are better alternatives. Foremost among the faults I'd cite in these Janes compilations are that they are contemporary accounts from a single national source-- meaning that the particulars for the speeds, armor, and capabilities of a good many ships are foggy or incorrect owing to the lack of proper information from potential enemies who did not care to advertise the precise specifications of their ships. Another issue is that the content comes not from a single edition of Janes annual catalog, but from a smattering of editions that spanned the era. The edition from which each ship's section is culled is not spelled out, so you are denied the ability to understand perhaps how reliable you may wish to regard each profile. However, owning Janes material has its own value, in that this is the Farmers' Almanac of the subject, and sometimes the weather forecast in an old Almanac is not as valuable as possession of the edition.
For a better source for this information, I would recommend Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, 1906-1921. You will probably have to use a bookfinding service for this, but you will not be dissatisfied if you can procure a copy. It features much more information on each ship, and in many cases provides valuable context that cannot readily be seen through endless tables of horsepower, armor, and the like. For instance, in many cases the specifications may not be false per se, but carry with them a host of caveats that defy a tabular form, and Conway's gives these to you. to paraphrase, e.g.: "This class was intended to be much the same as the preceding class, aiming solely to reduce per unit cost and fatten the fleet." or "The new Mark XI guns these ships carried had a longer range than the preceding Mark X weapons, but their higher velocity came at a cost of greatly reduced accuracy at common ranges and was seen in retrospect as a failed design." That type of contextual overview is what any source like this needs to be a truly reliable document. While it cannot thereby tell you EVERYTHING, it creates in each reader a sense that numbers lie, and that sometimes looking to sources for comparative analysis is an essential companion to having a table of figures that purports to capture the ship.

A good Book

I found Jane's Fighting Ships of World War I to be a great reference book that goes along with Jane's Fighting Ships of WWII. The book includes all navies that were in WWI (too many to list). All pictures are black & white. The only color picture is the dust jacket. For each Navy, the book lists or shows the ranks that are availible, the flags used, location of naval bases, etc. Usually, there is only one picture (if one is available)of each ship. If you are a WWII buff, you will need this book to go along with the Jane's Fighting Ships of World War Two.

An authoritative review of the Navies of 49 countries.

“Jane's” is probably the world's leading byword when it comes to information about ships especially, though not exclusively, ships of the world's navies. In this special edition of those warships which existed during WW1 we are treated to the full specifications of each vessel complete with the same information with regards to its machinery and armament.

Each section (Navy) commences with waterline silhouette profiles of the entire fleet followed by individual classes of ships from biggest to smallest. For the vast majority of entries we have a detailed profile and deck view of each class of ship with all parts numbered and named. Additionally, in most cases the publishers have been able to include at least one photograph (often more than one) of each type of ship. However, the publishers do point out that some of these pictures are of an inferior quality but are included in the interests of completeness because no other pictures are available.

Various engineering and gunnery notes are also found in addition to more general information explaining the specific differences between various ships of the same class.

Altogether, typical 5 star material from an established publisher of high quality material.

One of the Funniest Movies Ever Made !

As a high school senior, I worked at the UA Cinemas, the Holy Grail was one of the movies that was shown for the Midnight Movies.

Monty Python, the comedy group, makes a glorious and gut busting movie of King Arthur and his quest for the Holy Grail.

I could write pages upon pages explaining the scenes, but rather, I just want to say that this is a Must Have Movie !! The characters that were created, for this movie, are to F¥¢king Funny !

From start to end, it is to difficult to keep a straight face ! You will find yourself making movie quotes as soon as you finish watching the movie. From ka-nig-its to Neee, it is hard to forget the scenes or humor!

The Hidden Chorus investigates the relationship between the chorus of Greek tragedy and other types of choral song in Greek society. Choruses performed on a range of occasions in Greek culture, ranging from private weddings and funerals to large-scale religious festivals, yet the relationship between these everyday or 'ritual' choruses and the choruses of tragedy has never been systematically examined. Swift discusses choruses from five ritual genres: paian (religious songs of celebration or healing), epinikion (songs for athletic victors), partheneia (songs for the transitions of young girls), hymenaios (wedding song), and thrênos (funerary song), and explores how these choral forms are evoked in tragedy. By examining the relationship between tragic and non-tragic choral song, she not only provides new insights into individual plays, but also enriches our understanding of the role poetry and song played in Greek life.
