The single most useful book I've found for spacecraft and mission design.

As a graduate student in space architecture, this is the single most useful book I have found for designing human missions and spacecraft. It is an extraordinary collection of valuable information.

Part textbook, part reference manual, the book includes both descriptive text and a wealth of numerical data. It is broken up into 31 chapters, each about 20 to 30 pages long. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of human spaceflight, such as structures, power systems, crew accommodations, or planetary surface vehicles, and each is written by one or more experts in the relevant field.

Although the book is designed for people who work with spacecraft for a living, it is very accessible. Anyone with a good grasp of algebra and a strong interest in spaceflight should be able to follow most of it.

If I could change one thing about this book, it would be to make it a hardbound edition. My copy is rapidly becoming dog-eared. It's just so blasted useful...

Good examples, but hard to follow

Mecahnics and Control of Robots provides a ``how-to'' introduction to robotics. Unfortunately there are several problems with the text. Some of the writing is cumbersome and hard to follow, and several fundamental items, such as homogeneous transformations, robot dynamics and control, are not adequately explained. It may be worth having for the examples if for no other reason.

Design with composite materials is often conducted in a two-step process: "preliminary design" and "detailed analysis". The former is covered by "Introduction to Composite Materials Design-2nd edition" and the free online software cadec-online.com is helpful for that as well. In large aerospace companies, once preliminary design is done, the project is handed over to the "detailed analysis" team, but most often than not the whole process is done by the same person or same team. Detailed analysis is covered by my twin boons: "Finite Element Analysis of Composites Materials" Using Abaqus and Using ANSYS, both 2nd Edition. These books cover all "mechanics" aspects of the design including deformation and strength. Other topics might be relevant depending on the application are covered in "Multifunctional Composites".

About the Author

Ever J. Barbero, BSME, BSEE, Ph.D., is a Fellow of ASME and SAMPE, and professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at West Virginia University. He is recognized internationally for his work on material models for composite materials. He is the author of a related textbook, Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials, two patents, and more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Fantastic Book

Barbero is a very talented technical writer. This book is incredibly easy to understand and it has plenty of example problems. This book strikes a nice balance between explaining the theory behind models, and teaching how to use the models. It fits well with Barbero's book on using FEM to model the behavior of composite materials, and between this book and Barbero's other FEM book, my senior engineering design team was able to accurately model a simple composite structure.

Great intro text, but no solutions to problems

This is a great introduction to composite materials. If you have an undergraduate degree (or upper-level undergrad student), this is a great text to start understanding composites. It walks you through just about everything you need to know, without getting into math that we do not have the ability to understand. The examples do a good job of putting things together. The only negative is there are no solutions to the problems. As a self-study, this is a pretty big downfall, but I understand why the publisher decided to do this.

Easy to Read Composite Book

I've taken Dr. Barbero's Composite FEA course at West Virginia University. Before commencement of the FEA course, I used this book to review the basics. I thoroughly enjoyed taking the course and learnt a lot.

This book is very easy to read and the examples given help you with the concepts being taught. Also, the design examples are practical in nature and can be used as a starting point in real world applications. The data tables given in the first few chapters are very useful.

This book is a very good reference for composite designers.

For years, overweight Americans have been counseled to turn away from meat and fat and embrace a high-carbohydrate diet. Joining a growing band of researchers that includes Barry Sears (The Zone), the Eades discuss the biochemical roles of hormones in the metabolic process to demonstrate why low-fat, high-carb programs don't always result in weight loss and present a convincing case for their high-protein, low-carb alternative. The key is preventing, through diet, overproduction of insulin, which itself "controls the storage of fat" and is triggered by the ingestion of carbohydrates. Their eating plan?which is bolstered by lists of protein and carbohydrate counts for common foods, a collection of about 75 appealing recipes and discussion of the necessity of exercise?will lead, they aver, to the body's more efficent burning of fat, leading in turn to reduction in one's percentage of body fat. Never enjoyed dieting so much!

I have followed the "Protein Power" plan for over 11weeks now, and have actually ENJOYED being on it! How many otherdiets can you say that about? In addition to not being hungry, I just can't feel "deprived" when I'm eating such good stuff and the weight is dropping off so fast. (I have lost over EIGHT INCHES off my waist in those 11 weeks, while eating chicken, eggs, steak, fish, cheese, & butter!)
As you can tell from the other reviews here, this plan works for most, if not all, who try it. (It seems like the few reviewers who didn't like this book either didn't understand it, or didn't follow what it said and then wondered why they didn't lose weight.)
The Drs. Eades do a great job of explaining not just WHAT works, but HOW and WHY it works, convincing even a skeptic like me. Their combination of scientific, historical & anecdotal evidence for their "adequate" protein/low carb diet will change the way you view how you and society at large eats. (BTW, some have suggested this plan doesn't work for people with blood type A -- not true. I'm type A pos.)
Oh, and if you're wondering, no, I am NOT a shill for authors of this book. If I were, I'd be pushing people to their website where they sell the plan for $150.00. This book contains everything you need! What a bargain! If, like me, you have struggled with weight all your life, it will be the best money you've ever spent.

The diet is about Protein, not fat.

I have read both the Atkin's New Diet Revolution book and Protein Power. If you had to choose one low carb book between these two, I would pick Protein Power. The reason I prefer this book is that Protein Power details the science behind the weight loss. Let me first start by saying that if you are seriously considering losing weight fairly quickly without compromising nutrition, this is the book/diet for you. Also, you have to have an open mind about eating mostly protein and forgetting the "high carb, low fat" regimen. Included in this book are exact steps, charts, food tables, and recipes on how to safely go on the protein diet, and still be healthy by eating certain veggies and certain fruits. I have lost 15 pounds in a short amount of time and I'm confident that you will accomplish your goal. What I also like about this book is that it promotes vitamin supplements, exercise, and other anecdotes on why/how this diet works. Don't just read this book, apply it.

Almost a year on the plan

A year ago I read Protein Power and it changed my life. I found it to be very clear, yet technical enough to provide me with some confidence in the Eades' research. They address most of the important issues; how it works, how much you can expect to lose, what to do if it's not working for you, what other books you should read, what you should know about cholesterol, etc. to get started. So far I have lost a total of 75 lbs., my cholesterol is down 39 points, my blood pressure is 100/70, I've developed a taste for vegetables that I never had before, I have energy and love to exercise, and I have no cravings for carbs, with the following exception: I decided to be less worried about being on the plan for the holidays. Since I'm a carb addict, I slipped for a while. So I started to read the book again. I'm enjoying it even more the second time! I got fired up, and found the plan to be the only diet I have ever gone off that I looked forward to going back on. A tip: Read other books on the subject. You'll keep coming back to this one. If you want to get fired up about it, too, write to me. Include Protein Power in the subject line.
