The Best Book on Obi

I have read and studied a lot of books on Obi divination mainly because it is one of the simplest, yet powerful oracular systems available. Out of all the books I have read, no other book cuts through the red tape like this one. He discusses information about the Orisha, offerings, the Obi Abata, the four cowrie divination and much more.
Often times other authors, in my opinion, get off on the tangent and get to discussing theory, philosophy and their own practices. Meanwhile if you are from a different house you end up having to dissect what they are saying in order to make use of the information. This is not the case with this book.
Baba Osundiya has done a great job by commenting upon other Orisha traditions and not pitting one against another, as I have read other authors do. He has recognized the strengths in all the Orisha traditions throughout the Diaspora, and records them within this book to give the reader a greater appreciation and understanding of Obi.
This is one of the best books on Obi I have ever read and highly recommend it to those who want to make use of this simple and powerful oracle in improving and bringing about balance into their life.

Elegantly concise, morally and ethically compelling, profound in the simplicity of the explication of the symbolism, as also in the tutelage, not only of the understanding of the oracle itself, but of the depths of human/cosmic nature that inform it.
Even if one never resorts to using this particular oracular system, the understandings that Mr. Osundiya lays out are eminently readable and usable, and compellingly so. They will likely be helpful to practitioners of any other divinatory system.
It's probable that initiates of the esoteric schools will find his ease of expression to be refreshing and most revealing. He speaks from the heart, and from the gut, and with an unobstructed mind. His writing flows like music.

Without exclamation marks and words of praise, this book is a must-have for initiates and non-initiates of the Orisa/Ifa traditions. It is concise yet thorough. The author does well to provide information, and training, within easy reading format. Baba Osundiya's work in this book proves vaulable to both academics and the serious learners. He approaches the unacquainted and well-versed students with appropiate tact. The information, wisdom and science provided in his text are stripped of denominational and regional overtones therby benefiting those academics/learners from various religious backgrounds. It is exactly what the title presents: theory and practice.

The biggest entry in the Routledge Language Family Series

THE INDO-ARYAN LANGUAGES, edited by George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain, is a typical installment of the Routledge Language Family Services, which seeks to give brief but insightful descriptions of as many languages in a family as possible. With this volume, Routledge has certainly outdone themselves, giving us over a thousand pages of linguistic goodness.

The first three chapters cover the language family in general. These are the General Introduction, "Sociolinguistics of the Indo-Aryan Languages" and "Writing Systems of the Indo-Aryan Languages". I am generally satisfied with the General Introduction's presentation of the debate over the Indo-European Urheimat and the influence from the substrate. However, I think it would have been better if George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain had laid out the devout Hindu line on this branch of linguistics, for they see Sanskrit as a perfect language of divine origin and the real parent of the Indo-European family, and they claim that Indo-European linguistics is a racist or colonialist science. That would better prepare readers for the nutjobs that discussions of these languages in public fora inevitably attract. Then there are three chapters on Middle Indo-Aryan. One covers Sanskrit, the second Asokan Prakrit and Pali, and the third Prakrits and Apabhramsa. The bulk of the book is dedicated to single-chapter descriptions of modern languages: Hindu, Urdu, Bangla, Asamiya, Oriya, Maithili, Magahi, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Panjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Sinhala, Dardic, and Kashmiri.

While I have training in Indo-European linguistics, my academic knowledge of this particularly family stops with Sanskrit, so I cannot give it much of a critical review. But for linguaphiles, this is sure to be an entertaining read and an exhaustive source of information.

Quite a detailed survey on Indo-Aryan.

This is a detailed survey, giving an overview of the phonology and grammar of most major Indo-Aryan languages. Though there is generally too little information on the history of the languages, like the sound changes or grammar changes. Likewise most chapters have no information about the dialects of the languages, beyond listing the dialects and sometimes saying what dialect is similar to what. There is unfortunately no chapter on the Dhivehi language, even though it is the official language of the Maldives, so it is an important language. Likewise the chapter on the various scripts of the Indo-Aryan languages has no mention of the Dhivehi script, which is a fascinating script, with both Arabic numerals and ancient numerals being adapted for use as consonants. There is also no chapter on the important Romany language (or it could be more accurately described as the Romany group of languages). In fact, Romany is hardly mentioned at all. There are two examples of Romany (spelled Romani by the author) in the chapter on Prakrits, saying that devoicing of murmured (meaning voiced aspirated) stops, like in the Paisaci Prakrit, occurred only in Romani and Dardic. Both examples are in Romani, and personally, as far as Dardic, I am aware of devoicing only in northern Kalasha. Other Dardic languages have either retained the voiced aspirates, or else have deaspirated them, sometimes resulting in a tone distinction. And even in Northern Kalasha, the devoicing is not general but sporadic, unlike Paisaci. The grammars of the various languages do not mention under what circumstances are subject pronouns not used, which is something I would want to know more about, as there are differences among the languages on where the pronouns are omitted.
But beyond these faults, the book is in general very informative and useful.

A Must for All Fusers!

I was afraid that this book might be a bit technical for an amateur artist such as myself. But what a pleasant surprise it has been! Not only does this volume contain pictures of beautiful glass work (towards which I will continue to aspire), but it also has very practical guidelines that make it seem possible to pick up this art form, even for a novice such as myself. And the best part is the way it has been written--when reading it I almost felt as though I was having a one on one conversation with the author, being given personal, light-hearted and yet meaningful instruction, rather than feeling as though I were reading from an assigned tome in a lecture hall. Great instruction on both the "how to" and the "how NOT to," as well as gorgeous pictures. A must for all fusers!

About the Author
Dr. Joel R. Fried is professor and chair of the department of chemical and biomedical engineering at Florida State University. Previously, he was professor and the Wright Brothers Endowed Chair in Nanomaterials at the University of Dayton. He is also professor emeritus of chemical engineering and fellow of the graduate school at the University of Cincinnati, where he directed the Polymer Research Center and led the department of chemical engineering. He holds B.S. degrees in biology and chemical engineering, and an M.E. degree in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in polymer science and engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Easy intro to polymers

This textbook provides a good introduction to polymers, their processing, applications, and properties. The book assumes minimal prior knowledge of polymers, and begins with a simple intro to properties such as glass transition temperature, molecular weight, thermoplastic versus thermoset.

Electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties of polymers are discussed and related to the structure and composition of the material.

The book is organized very well. It includes dedicated chapters on synthesis, processing, degradation, and for the different classes of polymers. Each chapter is short and can stand alone by itself. A short list of references is also provided at the end of each chapter, and these are organized according to the different sections in each chapter.

The level of the text is appropriate for juniors or seniors in engineering or chemistry. The math is kept at a simple level; nothing harder than integral calculus, and there are a lot of pictures and diagrams. The amount and scope of information also warrants purchasing this as a general reference for polymers.

I recommend this book for those who are learning about, or teaching about polymers.

Excellent Book. I use it for my grad class. Covers most topics that are required to gain a sufficient introductory knowledge in polymer science. I would recommend it to undergrads as well as grad students.

Good intro to polymers, well formatted for Kindle

This is a really nice introduction to polymers, and covers most major topics. It nicely complements the Intro to Polymers book by Young and Lovell (also another nice intro book). This book is geared for science majors and engineers. It has some basic math (algebra and a little calculus), and assumes a basic understanding of chemistry and organic chemistry.

I also like that it reads well on a Kindle (Kindle PC App and iPad Kindle app). Chemical structures are graphically clear, and the mathematical equations in the book are readable. Not the best Kindle formatted book I've seen, but not bad.
