Success is a choice often hard-earned

After reading and watching Klaus Hempfling for a while, it's easy to start regarding him as having almost superhuman abilities. His impact on horses is so astonishing, and he speaks and writes on them with such authority and insight, that it seems he has always been, as a fortune teller once told him, "two-thirds horse!"

This book is an important reminder that Klaus is still very much human. When I look at Klaus today he seems to be a man in complete control of his own destiny, but he makes it clear in this book that there was once a time when he battled through dark episodes of uncertainty, self-doubt, self-pity, anger, anguish, despair and fear.

The Message from the Horse charts the period where Klaus made his first and most important breakthrough in really understanding horses, just a few short years before he published Dancing with Horses. Before this discovery Klaus struggled to connect to horses in a meaningful way or to understand them to his own satisfaction, and even came close to giving up on them altogether.

Unlike his other works in English, this "autobiographical narrative" contains no instruction on horsemanship. It reads more like a novel, although to my knowledge there is no fiction - it is a retelling of events as Klaus recalled them, without embellishment. For me it answered many of the questions I had about Klaus' past, and it provided insight and context to many of his comments in other books.

The events Klaus describes take place in a relatively short period in Spain, but it is clear that this is the most significant time in his life. We are with him as he begins his quest, as he meets his frightening stallion for the first time and as, exhausted and hungry, he finally encounters the wild horses. Of course, this book is about much more than horses.

For those who have followed Klaus for a while, and feel that he is sometimes cryptic or stingy with his instruction, be assured that Klaus went through something of an ordeal to learn what he did. He spends much of the book with an old monk who ultimately helps him seek out the message of the horse. But this cantankerous old monk gave little away, apparently spending more time ignoring, chastising or tormenting Klaus instead. I was surprised at just how much of a page-turner this book was. Klaus describes events succinctly - the prose is rich but without any unnecessary ornamentation or sentimentality. I can't comment on the accuracy of the translation, but it is pleasant to read, and the translator seems to have captured the same spirit and feel that comes through in the English translations of some of Klaus' other works.

Both horse lovers and non-horse people can enjoy and learn much from this book. If you are thinking about reading some of Klaus' works for the first time, this may be a good introduction. And for those who are familiar with Klaus, they do not need to read a review to know that they will probably love this book.

Most Excellent!

Great book! Ordered two, finished one and gave one to a friend. It is the story of a turning point in Klaus' life, and so much more... so much wisdom and guidance can be learned from reading this book. I have many pages marked to re-read. Klaus' wisdom bubbles up from day to day, continually encouraging and accepting at wherever we are on the path, we can take the next step. Highly recommended as one of my 5 best books!

Over the years as a student of KFH, I've picked up so many nuggets of life wisdom, not just horse wisdom. He's an amazing man and this book gives a lot of insight into how much of a struggle he had to go through to get on his life path and ultimate destiny.

Note that this is very different than his other books that are in the English language so far. It gives a lot of insight into his struggle to find his path when it was not so clear. Horses can be the ultimate test of a human. A lesson for all of us that to persevere on the Knight's way is often a challenging journey of inner growth and persistence. It's a must read.

Full of gems, deep insights. Very honest. Not, however, much insight to his true journey of self-discovery, but a great story well told nonetheless. I would like to read the sequel! (If there was one.)

Quick City Tour

Paul Cartledge's engaging history of Ancient Greece fills the niche of a quick guide to the places, names and events that a reader may want learn about in order to get oriented to a vast and much covered topic. He does this in a readable fashion with maps and a handful of well-chosen plates. He admirably uses the latest in archeological scholarship to fill out his work, which nonetheless remains intentionally cursory.

As noted in the , his framework is 11 cities that he describes in the chronological order that they were important to the evolving history of the Ancient Greek world, enabling him to cover such topics as Ancient Mycenaean Greece, the colonization movements both east and west of mainland Greece, the conquests of Alexander and the Hellenistic world, and the rise and fall of the Byzantine civilization.

The chief criticism is inherent in the project itself. Names, places speed by so quickly that one is left knowing that one has passed through the countryside but is unable to say much about it. Having read other histories, I was aware of the vast amounts of material that needed to be edited out. And in fairness Cartledge devotes many pages at the end for an annotated section of suggestions for further reading.

But if you are in the market for a Cook's Tour of the Ancient World, this Baedeker will probably fit the bill until you have the leisure to come visit at greater length.

A Scholarly Overview of Ancient Greece

It's been pointed out that this book is but a very short introduction to ancient Greece. Judging from its size and title, one can certainly agree. However, the level at which the prose is pitched is much more formal than the usual plain language that is more readily accessible to a broad readership. Also, because of the specifics of the topics discussed and the professional opinions expressed, scholars of ancient history may enjoy this book more than would a general reader who simply wishes to learn a bit of ancient Greek history. Aside from this, the writing style is relatively friendly, quite authoritative, often lively and even occasionally tongue-in-cheek. The book also has a rich and elegant vocabulary - so rich in fact that I occasionally had to re-read various passages with dictionary in hand. In addition, I found several passages to be rather convoluted, usually because of very long-winded sentences. The concept of focussing each chapter on a different ancient Greek city is a good one. However, each such chapter tends to concentrate mainly on a few highlights, issues and key individuals rather than an attempt at an abbreviated and evened-out chronological history aimed at the interested general reader.

In short, this book is not what I was expecting and, as a result, I was disappointed. I still gave it four stars because locked between its covers lies quite a bit of fascinating and detailed information. I intend to read it again in the future, but much more slowly.

a different approach to presenting ancient greece

This book, part of the extensive Very Short Introductions (Oxford University Press), is about Ancient Greece, which was characterized by its several city-states while lacking a central organization. The author took a potentially interesting, but also challenging, approach to organize the book chronologically in terms of 11 towns: Cnossos, Mycenae, Argos, Miletus, Massalia, Sparta, Athens, Syracuse, Thebes, Alexandria, and Byzantion. The several important facts about Ancient Greece are developed respectively to each of these city-states. For instance, the customs of the Dorians are described in the chapter about Argos, and greek colonization as part of the chapter on Massalia.

I felt the chapters read very differently, some being very engaging (such as Sparta) while others tend to be somewhat arid, perhaps even academic (e.g. Syracuse and Thebes). The manner, as well as the level of details, in which the several subjects are presented vary considerably. Several of the included figures are not referred to in the text and seem to float isolated through the book. I believe the book emphasizes history too much while providing less substantial description of important contributions from ancient Greece, especially arts and philosophy/science. Also, as several issues need to be covered in a given city, the text tend to be fractioned and heterogeneous. This is perhaps why most of the alternative approaches to ancient Greece are organized along themes such as history, religion, arts, philosophy, etc.

All in all, I believe the choice to organize the book along some main cities worked only partially, mostly in the cases of more self-contained city-states such as Sparta and Athens. The Appendix includes some nice material about the panhellenic sanctuaries, with emphasis on Delphi.

Highly recommended

John Gabriel draws from his experiences and manifold success as a high school English teacher, team leader and administrator in writing this book. He gives clear, practical advice and a true vision to accomplish the curriculum goals of any school as a team leader. Honing one's own intuitive sense, and skills of communication, trouble shooting, prevention of foreseeable problems, and motivation of teachers toward a common goal are only a few of the accomplishments of this book. The author addresses differentiated curriculum, much needed today with our increasingly diverse student population in the regular classroom. I was impressed with his varied and incremental approach to change when faced with resistance by teachers or administrators. Time and again, the author demonstrates that good intuition coupled with a tireless and thorough effort yield results in higher student achievement and test scores. If team leaders follow the approach of this book, their students, teachers and whole school will benefit. With the "No Child Left Behind" Act and high stakes testing now in place nationwide, this book is vital and gives the proper frame to accomplish any school's goals.

Good book!

I had to buy this book for a class. It has some great ideas for school wide leadership by using teacher leaders. The book correctly points out that administrators come and go, but teachers are usually there for much longer. So it makes more sense for teachers to take more of a leadership role.
I would recommend this book.

I gave it a 4 because I don't know if there's anything revolutionary about it's approach, but it does make some good points and make us notice things that were in front of us the whole time.

An overlooked masterpiece

This book looks at American cultural history since the Civil War through the prism of historical changes in the field of psychotherapy--and at the same time puts psychotherapy in a historical context. It's simply the best cultural history of the US I've ever read. It traces the threads--primarily unbridled capitalism, rugged individualism, and the decline of the family and community--that have left us with the "empty self" which so many suffer from today. That is, a self that is depressed, anxious, psychosomatic, addicted--desperate to be filled up, by consumer goods, by peak experiences, by celebrity, by psychotherapy--without recognizing how much of our suffering comes from social change.

The thread of self is woven into psychology and history

This is a fun and informative description of how history and psychology have influenced each other, resulting in a sense of self that shapes and is shaped by our culture. Many psychological approaches end up in navel gazing introversion. Cushman dispenses with these and paints a clear picture of history and psychology dancing together in an embrace that allows the self to be both a cultural artifact and a culture shaper. Ideas can change the world and Cushman's book is full of ideas that have changed history, for better or for worse. The combination of academic rigor, interesting anecdotal evidence and plain funny material are rare in a single volume. If you are tired of the standard psychological introspection, try this one for a refreshing perspective on the dynamics of history, culture and the self.

Why is this not manditory reading for psychology?

A fascinating, entertaining book. I cannot recommend Cushman highly enough! It is truly disappointing that book has been overlooked by the discipline of psychology. However, the reasons it has been are obvious once you read it. Cushman details how psychology ignores its basic assumptions (e.g., about the self, the nature of understanding) and consequently perpetuates the problems it seeks to allieviate. This is a central point -- psychology is elevating a notion of self (i.e., the empty self) that is only filled by psychotherapy, not "cured". For those who are willing to reflect on how the profession is influenced by moral presuppositions, and political and economic factors - this is a must read. Moreover - Cushman offers solutions. For those who know of this book -- it is a hidden classic.

Light and funny, with plenty of points to consider at a deeper level

I've been using computers socially since 1992, chatting on and sysopping local dial-up BBSes (ahhh the good ol' days!). We definitely had our share of people faking details of their lives, and because of that I think I've always looked at online personas with an ultra-skeptical eye. I read the notes and looked at the photos Dave Cicirelli posted and thought, "Really? People believed that?!" And inwardly, I scoffed at them. But then I reminded myself: Facebook is a different sort of community from the old BBSes and modern day message boards. If I were truly honest with myself, how much would I be willing to believe if someone I already knew in "real life," a friend, was posting fake details about his/her life? Would I recognize the embellished stories? Would I spot the Photoshopped images and cry foul? Or would I rationalize away any suspicions, because I "know" (or a friend knows) this person?

Questions like this are exactly what Cicirelli ends up exploring in his wild and crazy 6-month hoax. He ponders the way friendships have changed since Facebook, especially for younger adults, for whom it has always been a presence. Cicirelli delves into these ideas as they surface during the course of his experiment. He is never once preachy, and he's quick to acknowledge when he's made assumptions or snap judgments. Best of all, unlike so many that have contemplated the impact of social media on our relationships, Cicirelli offers a balanced and hopeful outlook.

Cicirelli maintains a relaxed, conversational style throughout. His narrative is interspersed with clips from his "Fakebook" wall and accompanying photos. There is a mystery that pops up early on, and the solution to that was completely unexpected! I actually searched back through the book to see if I should have known, if I'd missed something.

Fakebook is light and funny, with plenty of points to consider at a deeper level. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and will be mulling it over for weeks to come.

Fakebook True Lies

I enjoyed Fakebook. Dave Cicirelli is a very good writer and I found the book hard to put down. You need to know that I am 54 years old and social media is not important OR interesting to me. I read the book (on my Kindle, actually) because the premise sounded interesting. And like I said, I really enjoyed reading it. I think it's a compliment to any writer (slash artistic creator) when the person experiencing the work takes time out to think about it outside of the time spent experiencing it. As a 54 year old, I didn't have to be told that Fakebook was, well, fake. As an old fogey, I've seen enough to know when the wool is being pulled over my eyes. Now, having said this, when I was in my 20s, I went out a few times with a guy who told me he and a friend had stolen a small plane and taken it for a joy ride. I was sort of incredulous but, still...maybe...? When he blew off a date with me and I finally saw him a few days later, he said that his cat had stolen his wallet and he lost track of time looking for it. Hmm...really? Your CAT? Maybe if it had been his dog...So, I think Fakebook worked for the audience it was addressed to, since they are still naïve and still want to believe in magic. Santa doesn't exist, but Dave Circirelli does...
