Design Drawing a good beginning

As a beginning architecture student I found the book to be most helpful. It contains excellent illustations on shading and shadow techniques, and on developing architectural perspectives. The CD-rom version is especially helpful in explaining some of the basic concepts. I would highly recomend this book to those interested in design architecture.

This book was recommended to me by an architect teacher of mine. After reading through it and browsing through the cd-rom that comes with it....I am very pleased that I got it. It contains all of the basics that you will need for drawing(perspective, isometric drawings, art terms).

it wouldn't be too much to say that this is one of the best books written for this purpose. the smooth transition from chapter to another and the gradual develpoment of skills and concepts makes reading through the book both exciting and benefitial. specially the chapters regarding perspective drawing. it gives u all the points and nearly every thing u might bump into. For those seeking to improve their drawing skills, this is ONE book u cannot miss.

Logic, Aesthetics, Ethics, Politics , and finally, metaphysics are the five parts of philosophy, Durant perceived that so dismembered philosophy loses its beauty and its joy. We should seek it not in its shriveled abstractness and formality, argued Will Durant, but clothed in the living form of genius. He advocated with Ariel, his wife and partner, that we should study not merely philosophies, but also philosophers. We should spend our time with the saints and martyrs of thought, letting their radiant spirits play about us until perhaps we too, in some measure, shall partake of what Da-Vinci called 'the noblest pleasure, a joy of understanding.' In his

Pleasure of Philosophy:

Epicurus of Samos died in 270 B.C., and his philosophy had been controversial since then. One reason is our tendency to reject pleasure as morally good. Durant has let down Freud theory of the 'pleasure principle' and Nietzsche glorification of the instincts, associated with evil and perversion, based on their unsound anti-Epicurian tendencies. Pleasure inclusive usages, according to Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, are most important in moral psychology, ethical theory, and the studies of the mind, including all joy and gladness, feeling good, or happy. Pleasure, as both intellectual and physical stimulation, promote happier philosophy fans. Intellectual pleasure, argues Roger Scruton, arise in contemplation, during the senses feast on favored subjects, when we rise above our purpose and begin to enjoy what we are doing for its own sake.

Science without Philosophy:

Science wishes to resolve the whole into parts, the organism into organs, the obscure into the known. Science tell us how to heal and how to kill. It reduces the death rate in retail and then kills us wholesale in war. But only wisdom, desire coordinated in the light of all experience, can tell us when to heal and when to kill. To observe processes and to construct means is science. To criticize and coordinate ends is philosophy. Science is analytical description; philosophy is synthetic interpretation. But, because in these days our means and instruments have multiplied beyond our interpretation and synthesis of ideals and ends, our life is 'full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.' For a fact is nothing except in relation to desire. It is not complete except in relation to a purpose and a whole. Science without philosophy, facts without perspective and valuation, cannot save us from despair.

Twenty years after its first publication in 1929 as, 'the mansions of philosophy,' 'and inquiries for it have mounted to the point where a new edition seemed forgivable, in the authors own words, he gave this confession as a preface to his revised edition, despite its gay new title!

"Some pages betray their composition a quarter of a century ago, and the reader will smile at several bad guesses that they contain; I have since found it safer to write about the past than about the future (Durant: the historian). Certain pages are heavily sentimental, but they still express me faithfully. others are cynical or unduly pessimistic, especially in chapter 18, 'Is Democracy A Failure?'; having discovered my own fallibility, i should be more lenient now... Despite these sins the book has, I like to believe, some redeeming qualities; and I send it forth again on the seas of ink to find here and there a kindred soul in the country of the mind." Topics covered include chassis stiffness and flexibility, suspension tuning on the cornering of a Winston Cup race car, suspension kinematics, and vehicle dynamics of road racing cars. Chapter 3 addresses the design of the racing chassis design and how aerodynamics affect the chassis, and the final chapter on materials brings out the fact that the modern racing car utilizes carbon construction to the maximum extent allowed by regulations. These technical papers, written between 1971 and 2003, offer what Smith believed to be the best and most practical nuggets of racing chassis and suspension design information. Editorial note: Carroll Smith passed away before he could complete this, his last SAE book. The SAE Publishing Technology Editor put the finishing touches on the book so that it could be published in honor of the service Carroll Smith made to SAE. An obituary and tribute to Carroll is included in this book.

100 bucks worth of copies?

I don't mind spending a 100 bucks on a book (on anything for that matter). Publishing this pile of copies in honor of racing engineer legend Carroll Smith is one thing, but asking 100 bucks for it...

Apparently the Society of Automotive Engineers doesn't know that it takes more than a Xerox machine to publish a book. Due to the obvious xeroxing some of the text and a lot of the figures are just unreadable. It reminds me of the "books" I had to buy for college.

I can only hope that the SAE will catch up with the advances made in the field of publishing and until then please buy something nice for your money.

excellent suspension design book

To start, SAE members get this book for $80. Considering there are 27 of the BEST technical papers selected from thousands, at $15-$20 each, this is a tremendous value! If you're in university, you can xerox the SAE papers in your library for free.

There's more to suspension design than roll centres, wheel rates and camber curves. It gives a much higher level insight to suspension and chassis design than even Carroll's earlier books - above undergraduate level. It's the difference between a five body model and a 2D analysis. Having my B.Sc in automotive engineering, I'm confident in recommending this book. It's nice to have a well-bound copy, and I refer to it frequently.

Dale Ewen, Executive Vice President of Parkland College, Illinois, (1999-present), graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in 1963 and an M. Ed. in 1966. He has been the recipient of several AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) awards and served as the organization's President (1989-91). A Fantastic Romance

The Miracle Girl by T.B. Markinson was a fun romance that kept me glued to my Kindle to find out what would happen next. The characters were realistic and engaging, and I cared about them from the beginning. Both JJ and Claire must face their pasts in order to move forward, but there are plenty of hurdles for them to overcome before they can find their happy ever after. I loved that the main characters were older than typical romance novels (JJ and Claire are in their forties). Because of their age, both JJ and Claire had pasts that complicated their present love, which served to make the plot even more realistic and engrossing. The setting of a small newspaper in Colorado added to the plot because there was plenty of office drama and minor characters that had a big impact on the story. The minor characters, such as Darrell, Avery, and Brenda, were easy to envision and just as engaging as the main characters. The Miracle Girl is full of love, heartache, and the characters’ journeys to face their shadow, which had me turning the pages wanting more. I highly recommend reading this one.

Hotter Than the Norm

I've enjoyed all of this author's other books, so when I settled down with this one, I fully expected more of the same. You know, great writing, great characters, and a universal theme that would have me feeling for and pulling for the protagonist. I figured, like her other books, it might make me angry, or make me laugh, or maybe even make me shed a tear or two. But I didn't expect it to make me... swallow my false teeth. Just kidding. I don't actually wear falsies, but if I did, I might have swallowed 'em. As it was, it just made me... blush.

You see, the writing and characters are as good as ever, but some of the "actions" within the story transported me outside of my old broad comfort zone, and smack dab into the land of Erotica. Okay, now don't get me wrong. I realize many many other people consider Erotica to be a very desirable destination, so they thoroughly enjoy books that take them to the land of licking, sucking, and sticking, but me? I was looking for a destination a little less... um... shall we say... exciting? Something more along the lines of Topeka...

Oh hush. No offense to Topeka. That's the first name that popped into my head. (I've never even BEEN to Topeka... I'm sure it's quite lovely.)

Bottom line, if you enjoy erotica, and aren't offended by coarse language, you will LOVE this book. Like I said, the writing is still terrific, and so are the characters. The story line is a little bit more light-hearted than T.B.'s earlier books, so there's a bit more humor, too. And ya know. That other stuff. That toe-curling stuff.

So buy it! Read it! Enjoy it! Just don't expect to end up in Topeka, because... "This isn't Kansas anymore, Toto!"

Deeply believable characters and a compelling storyline

The characters make this book, especially the main character, JJ. T.B. has created a strong, yet flawed character who has successfully battled many demons in her past. The author pulls no punches in making JJ real, showing us a character who has battled substance abuse while also pining for the lost love of her life, Claire. Add in business-related drama at a local newspaper, and you have a read you won't be able to put down!

About the Author
Christopher T. Russell has written over 1500 articles in books and journals on planetary and space physics and has been cited over 45,000 times. He has been awarded the AGU's Macelwane medal, its Fleming medal and COSPAR's Science award. He has been a principal investigator on numerous missions including ISEE 1 and 2, Pioneer Venus, the ISTP/Polar mission and the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. He is also the Principal Investigator of the ion-propelled Dawn Discovery mission to the asteroid belt.

Janet G. Luhmann has authored or co-authored over 600 publications in areas of space and planetary physics and served as Senior Editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research, Space Physics. She has been awarded AGU's Fleming medal and COSPAR's Science award. She has been an Investigator on numerous NASA and NSF projects involving the Sun's control of the space environments of the Earth and planets, most recently the STEREO mission to observe the 3D effects of solar activity in the inner solar system, and the MAVEN mission to study Mars atmosphere escape to space.

Robert J. Strangeway is an author or co-author on over 200 publications covering a variety of space physics topics. He regularly teaches the Introduction to Space Physics course at the University of California, Los Angeles, which is the basis for this book. He is currently the Senior Editor for the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. In addition to serving as an Investigator with the missions AMPTE/CCE, Pioneer Venus and FAST he was the Principal Investigator for the magnetometers developed for Space Technology 5.

BEATLES MUSIC THEORY NIRVANA!!!!!

As a musician, songwriter and Beatles fanatic having read easily 100 books on them, this book to me was the absolute holy grail!!

If you have ANY musical training at all and want to understand the Beatles' musical magic -- or use the Beatles music to learn about music theory -- this book delivers in spades! Unlike the more "professorial" Beatles music theory books (e.g Everett, Mellers) -- which sound more like doctoral dissertations and try to shoehorn Beatles into CLASSICAL-music analysis terminology and constructs, this book is written BY a rock musician FOR a rock musician and by a TRUE Beatles afficionado and connoisseur -- for both those of us who share his obsessions and those who don't. If you are a fellow rock or amateur musician who is Beatles-obsessed you will have found a TRUE kindred spirit -- and if you're not, you will learn about the more esoteric questions and quirks of Beatles music that have obsessed us connoiseurs since we first started playing guitar.

To wit: an entire CHAPTER devoted solely to that opening ringing chord of "A Hard Day's Night!"

In any case, you will gain a whole new appreciation of the Beatles' innovation, choices and techniques, not to mention an amazing bag of tricks to use if you are a songwriter.

There is an appendix that provides an unbelievably clear and concise overview and foundation of BASIC MUSIC THEORY for the absolute beginner. What's unique and great about that is that it uses BEATLES SONGS as examples of EVERY POINT. What better way to understand the basics? And then the rest of the book takes off from there.

For his sources, the author has studied -- and cites -- not only the standard Beatles releases, but bootlegs, and he even studied their finger positions on performance videos, interviewed top Beatles tribute bands to see what chord inversions they use, etc. etc. That's how thorough it is.

My ONLY caveat would be that if you have NO musical training at all and NO inclination to study a LITTLE music theory -- it might be too technical for you. But if you are even SLIGHTLY inclined toward those things -- even a guitar player who only knows a few chords -- and loves Beatles songs -- it will be an amazing opportunity to grow your understanding of music theory using Beatles' music as your school and a wonderfully clear-writing author as your teacher.

I spent a lot of money on this book and once I started reading it, I would gladly have spent almost any sum. It is PRECISELY the book I'd always longed for someone to write -- and even though it took 30 years -- someone finally did! If this type of material interests you -- don't hesitate for a nanosecond -- cough up whatever it costs. If my house were burning down and I could only save one book...yup...Songwriting Secrets of the Beatles.

This could be...and I'm not saying this lightly...the greatest book ever written about music. Any musician that wants to improve their songwriting ability needs this book and a couple months. That's really it. Bravo Dominic, your work has inspired me almost as much as the Beatles themselves!

This is an amazing, exhaustively in-depth book on the music of The Beatles, and the theory behind it. I'm a self taught musician who wants to learn enough theory to know what I'm doing, and I'm also a huge fan of The Beatles so I figured this book would be a great start. It seems to me that this book presupposes a knowledge of theory, so I would recommend getting book on the basics of theory before diving into this book, because there's A LOT to wrap your head around. All in all I feel it's a great resource for Beatles fans and theory junkies alike.
