The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to the basic concepts of traditional analog electronic communications systems and to expand the reader's knowledge of more modern digital, optical fiber, microwave, satellite, data, and cellular telephone communications systems. The book was written so that a reader with previous knowledge in basic electronic principles and an understanding of mathematics through the fundamental concepts of calculus will have little trouble understanding the topics presented. Within the text, there are numerous examples that emphasize the most important concepts. Questions and problems are included at the end of each chapter and answers to selected problems are provided at the end of the book.

This edition of Electronic Communications Systems: Fundamentals Through Advanced provides a modern, comprehensive coverage of the field of electronic communications. Although nothing has been omitted from the previous edition, there are several significant additions, such as three new chapters on telephone circuits and systems, two new chapters on cellular and PCS telephone systems, and three new chapters on the fundamental concepts of data communications and networking. In addition, numerous new figures have been added and many figures have been redrawn. The major topics included in this edition are as follows.

Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the basic concepts of electronic communications systems and includes a new section on power measurements using dB and dBm. This chapter defines modulation and demodulation and describes the electromagnetic frequency spectrum. Chapter 1 also defines bandwidth and information capacity and how they relate to one another, and provides a comprehensive description of noise sources and noise analysis.

Chapters 2 and 3 discuss signals, signal analysis, and signal generation using discrete and linear-integrated circuits. Chapter 3 gives a comprehensive coverage of phase-locked loops.

Chapters 4 through 8 describe analog communications systems, such as amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), phase modulation (PM), and single sideband (SSB). A comprehensive mathematical and theoretical description is given for each modulation technique and the basic components found in analog transmitters and receivers are described in detail.

Chapter 9 discusses the fundamental concepts of digital modulation, including comprehensive descriptions of amplitude-shift keying (ASK), frequency-shift keying (FSK), phase-shift keying (PSK), quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK). Chapter 9 introduces the student to trellis code modulation and gives a comprehensive description of probability of error, bit error rate, and error performance.

Chapters 10 and 11 describe the basic concepts of digital transmission and multiplexing. Chapter 10 describes pulse code modulation, while Chapter 11 describes time-division multiplexing of PCM-encoded signals and explains the North American Digital Hierarchy and the North American FDM Hierarchy. Wavelength division multiplexing of light waves is also introduced in Chapter 11.

Chapters 12 through 15 describe the fundamental concepts of electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic wave propagation, metallic and optical fiber transmission lines, free-space wave propagation, and antennas.

Chapters 16 through 18 give a comprehensive description of telephone instruments, signals, and wireline systems used in the public telephone network. Chapters 19 and 20 describe the basic concepts of wireless telephone systems, including cellular and PCS.

Chapters 21 through 23 introduce the fundamental concepts of data communications circuits and describe basic networking fundamentals, such as topologies, error control, protocols, hardware, accessing techniques, and network architectures.

Chapters 24 through 26 describe the fundamental concepts of terrestrial and satellite microwave-radio communications. Chapter 24 describes analog terrestrial microwave systems; Chapters 25 and 26 describe digital satellite systems.

Appendix A describes the Smith Chart.

Lots of Little Problems make for one big flaw

Like other reviewers I have found many problems that indicate lack of a quality technical editor. There are several typos per chapter most heavily concentrated in the math sections (missing parenthesis, squares, improper powers, units and just bad math). This has been typical for other editons of this book. I would not suggest using this text in a learning enviroment due to the confusion caused by the numerous typos.

A bit thin...

This is a collection of academic articles describing various aspects of business intelligence. Allthough the articles are interesting in themselves, the title of the book hints at a more hands-on approach than actually found in the text. Also the Accounting and Finance perspective is marginally represented, with no more than parts of two chapters devoted to the subject. I would say that about 60% of the book is an introduction to the world of business intelligence giving a birds eye view of subjects like ETL, OLAP and datawarehousing. 30% of the book is about more or less related subjects like the business reporting xml schema. Finally about 10% of the book actually handles accounting and finance. I was a bit disappointed.

I have scoured the internet in search of a concise discussion of accounting data warehouses. This book finally provides some clear guidance. Chapters 3 and 4, in particular, provide the best explanation yet of how accounting data warehouse requirements are different from sales data warehouses. Bravo to this book.

Buy this book!

This book is fantastic! It is probably written primarily with beginning and intermediate French speakers in mind, but advanced French speakers can also "upgrade" the techniques they use to learn the language. There are many techniques described in the book on how to learn French efficiently and in a fun way. There is also a lot about motivation and self-confidence--I found this most helpful.

I am an an advanced French speaker, and I still found this book indispensable.

Not worthwhile

This is a short book that teaches you almost nothing about French. Instead, it tries to provide some tips for language learning, but I found them to be either common sense (e.g., spend time each day) or not very helpful. The author does not give clear guidelines for how to learn, but instead just suggests choosing among all the usual options (Assimil, Duolingo, etc). The author is a native French speaker who has learned English, but doesn't have any experience learning French. There are lots of free language learning blogs on the web that provide better advice, along with comments by other users that can be very informative, so a simple web search will give you better results.

Excellent and Informative

I've been trying to learn how to speak French for about 15 years now. And although I have learnt a language in the past (English is not my native tongue), I had never managed to make it 'click' with other languages. For the longest time there was a glass ceiling that I kept hitting with my learning, and I didn't understand it. Every time I reached that point, I'd become discouraged until the next time I 'decided to learn French' only to find myself in the same rut a few weeks later. Although the initial purpose of this book is obviously not to point out your mistakes, but rather offer new alternatives, it has definitely helped me reevaluate my approach towards learning and turn my shortcomings into the strategies that will make it possible to truly improve my learning - not only French but any other language and even other job skills.

In this attempt, I am past that rut and I am not fluent yet, but this time I'm positive I will be. Very worth reading.

Hilarious motorcycle gang rom com!

When I read this story was about outlaw biker gangs I never thought it would prove to be such a fun read - it is, quite simply, hilarious! Ok, so some parts are sort of scary, but the reactions of the heroine, Minerva Coolidge (aka Minnie), are brilliant and had me laughing out loud for much of the story. Minnie’s family head a Californian biker gang but she wants to leave all that behind and become a super model and she’s doing the best to ensure she gets there, even if that means running away from home. Unfortunately she was unaware that a rival biker gang are out to get her. When they try to kidnap her from the airport she proves she’s a feisty lady and no pushover. Helped by Big Mike, she manages to escape but then discovers that he’s been sent by her brother with instructions to put her on the next available flight back home but they hadn’t bargained for her stubborn determination to make her dreams come true. She isn’t just good looking, she’s resilient, independent and a force to be reckoned with - as all the men involved are about to find out!

Minnie is a brilliant character, so funny and smart that she easily outwits the men around her in the most hilarious ways, even though she may be scared. Big Mike initially totally underestimates Minnie but his attitude changes as he endeavours to cope with her resourcefulness and inventiveness. The couple face trouble every way they turn, some self imposed, more from rival gangs, more kidnapping attempts, danger and death but her crazy innovations and, of course, the romance, make this an easy, fun read that I’ll be laughing about for some time to come - and I can't wait to read any sequels! No hesitation - my recommendation is go get yourself a copy of this delightful book to immerse yourself in.

Fun, original and quirky

This is the second adventure in the Big Mike and Minnie series, although this is the intro to our strange and lovable pair of main characters. Just like the first, it's a fun, quirky, story told with wit and skill. Kelly's imagination shines throughout, as does her writing skill. Minnie is a model determined to make it in New York, her outlaw biker family want her back home. She's tough, resourceful, smart, and a helluva risk-taker, thanks to her very unconventional background. Big Mike is... big. He's tough. Black ops tough. How they end up in a relationship is a romp, in the truest sense of the word. If you want a well-written romance with lots of action, wit, humor and originality, you owe it to yourself to meet Big Mike and Minnie.

Witty and charming; an excellent read.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Initially, this novel peaked my interest because the plot seemed witty, and I just happened to be in the mood for a romance. I must say this book did not disappoint. On the Run is exactly what I expected it to be: humorous and adorable.

Big Mike is a tough guy who has had his fair share of fights, and Minnie is an ambitious model who is trying to avoid her biker family upbringing being revealed to the fashion community. When Minnie’s brother, Crash, asks Big Mike to look after Minnie in the midst of a turf war between Minnie’s family’s biker gang and another rival gang, things start to get interesting. I was slightly skeptical in the first few chapters whether these two were going to mesh together well—which is part of what makes this novel so charming. These clashing characters butt heads and drive each other crazy, but they grow on the reader as well as on each other. I would call it an interesting twist on the classic Romeo and Juliet storyline.

Personally, I felt a little at odds with how the book’s perspective changes from chapter to chapter. I appreciated being able to see how Big Mike’s opinion of Minnie morphed as the story progressed (and vice versa), but at the same time it was difficult to tell at the beginning of some chapters who’s view I was seeing the world from.

Introductory Islamic Briefing

"The Religion of the Crescent: Being the James Long Lectures on Muhammadanism" by William St. Clair Tisdall. Originally published in 1895, with a revised 1905 second edition (which is the 2009 reprint by "Kessinger Publishing's Legacy Reprints"). The author was the former secretary of the "CMS" or Christian Missionary Service Mission in Julfa, Persia {Iran]. The 1906 edition (second revised edition) was published in London for the "Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge." The author discusses four aspects of Sunni Islam: (1) its Strengths [40 pages], (2) its Weaknesses [70 pages], (3) its Origin [60 pages], and (4) its Influence [40 pages]. Regarding Islam's (1) "Strengths", the author discusses: Unity of God; hatred of idolatry; its Five Foundations; and other the basic stuff about Islam. The author becomes more exploratory when he discusses (2) its "Weaknesses:" Errors about Divine Nature: Master, not Father; Allah a despot; Islam not Anthropomorphic in doctrine; Allah commands breaches of Moral Law; Fate; View of Sin unsatisfactory; Denial of an Atonement, Christ's Deity and Death denied; the Muslim Paradise: gardens, fountains, maidens, Houries; Hell: all Muslims ultimately saved; Error f understanding such phrases in Christian sense; an Antichristian faith. Pertaining to (3) "its Origin": pre-Islamic Arabs; Arabian idolatry; Influence of Talmudic Judaism on Muhammad; Influence of Christianity on Muhammad; Fabricates revelations: Muhammad's miracles; Obligation to persecute. Regarding (4) Islam's "Influence": the author discusses Muslim family life; Political life; Religious life; Rationalism; Slavery: sanctioned by Muhammad; Concubinage; Position of women; the Bible annulled; No greater obstacle to Christianity than Islam; and The Wahhabis. The author was versed with Arabic, so he does quote in Arabic from various ayats (verses) in the Koran. Regarding all of the above-mentioned topics, the author essentially mentions them - he really doesn't `analyze' or `scrutinize' them extensively; he shows how they `fit' together, and he notes a number of discrepancies, but there isn't really any deep dissection of the discrepancies. This is more of an beginner's broad and brief introduction to Islam. Interestingly, the author notes Mohammad's requirement that Muslims must wash the soles of their feet (otherwise the soles will be in `hell-fire'); I saw a Saudi soldier in 1991 in Hafra al-Batin sprinkle his boots with water in a restroom before dinner (an example of the symbolic, ritual `wudu'). As a Christian missionary, the author was concerned about: "The denial of Man's free-will, and the belief that all our actions are inalterably predestined for us, prevent Muslims from feeling the terrible guilt of [Original] Sin" (p. 87). At times `objective' scholarship of the Koran is simply displaced by a `The Quran is false, because the Bible is Truth' mentality. The author occasionally quotes from the ahadeeth to help clarify some Koranic topic. Overall, this is too short of a booklet for the author to briefly discuss so many topics; not a book I would recommend to the novice Islamic student.

Visual Encyclopedia Ships Review

I found this book to be a disappointment since I had expected more photographs to be intertwined with the illustrations. In addition, the classification of ships was disorganized in my opinion (for example, I would expect the Nimitz class aircraft carrier and its variations to be grouped all in the same section, instead of being split up in two).
