Review
Traditional knitting skills are still used in practically every garment that's made. Discover 150 stitch patterns with 12 knitting patterns to hone your skills. Excellent information is provided on all aspects of knitting. The book begins with textured stitches it then moves onto twisted stitches, raised stitches, cable, lace and colour work. The introduction to each section includes interesting historical information. Each stitch has an image of a finished sample and the pattern is written in longhand as well as on a chart. Some of the photographs of the knitted samples are unfortunately poor quality. This is a useful book not only for those who wish to carry on the tradition of knitting, but also for those interested in contemporary knitting as the stitches can easily be used in any project.-Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts This book offers an inspiring collection of traditional stitch patterns from Europe and beyond. It's organised into key sections - textured knit and purl stitches, twisted stitches, cables, lace, raised stitches and colourwork - which are guaranteed to inspire your own designs. Each chapter presents large photographs of knitted swatches accompanied by both written and charted nstructions. Original knitting patterns appear throughout the book, demonstrating some of the stitch patterns featured. These range from simple textured bags, cowls and slippers to more complex heirloom blankets, cabled cardigans and stranded colourwork mittens. Each section also includes a look at the history of knitting styles, from fishermen's ganseys to fine lace and Fair Isle. This will be a great resource for anyone keen to explore the potential of the knitted stitch.-The Knitter Knitting has been with us since the Middle Ages and is currently enjoying a revival. This is not just another book of projects, nor an encyclopedia but a book looking at the origins of knitting and how traditional patterns can be used today to make many attractive and useful items. Starting with a brief potted history this book is divided into sections on stitches. These are sensibly arranged mostly in order of difficulty with textured stitches such as plain and purl first, through twisted stitches (i.e. cable), lacework and intarsia methods. Each chapter starts with the history of the stitch type and has pages of traditional patterns to practice and use in your own designs. Each pattern is short and there are usually three to a page, with a photograph of the finished work, color key, written instructions and charts. At the end of each chapter are a couple of projects, ranging from clothes and accessories for adults and children to items such as a hot water bottle cover, cushion cover and baby blanket. You can even knit your own "raspberry beret! Finally at the end of the book there is a brief section with staged photographs on how to knit, although this is to remind those who already know but are rusty as this is very much a book for the intermediate knitter, or at least the improver. Overall it is a handsome book well illustrated with old photographs and archive pictures as well as all the projects and would make a great gift for anybody with an interest in the history of knitting.-Myshelf.com

Wanted to Love this Book
By Looking for the Best
After reading and reviewing this new book, I still don't know its purpose. There's nothing in here that isn't in a number of other collections. Many of the stitch patterns are poorly executed; some are knit in dark colors, and the reader can barely see the detail.
The bits of history are interesting. However, the writing style is disjointed, cumbersome, and tedious. I do not exaggerate when I say the text is painful to read.
Finally, there are no heirloom patterns to knit. Instead, there are a few patterns for socks, hats, shawls that are mundane and amateurish.
Do check this book out at a library before purchasing.

Photograph Quality of Stitch Examples Unacceptable
By DFE
If I had flipped thought this book at a store, I would not have purchased it. I am shocked at the abysmal quality of the photographs of the stitches in this book. I love pattern collections and have dozens of books, including pamphlets published over 80 years ago and I can honestly say I have never seen worse photograph. The texture chapter is the worst with incorrectly lit dark blue samples that are nearly useless. Many of the samples are incorrectly blocked with crooked stitch lines or in the case of the sad eyelet chapter not even uniformly opened. The photos in the twisted stitch section and raised stitch section or OK. Only the photos in the cables and colorwork sections are truly acceptable.
The patterns included are fairly mundane basic pattern that are commonly found in stitch collections. Only the twist patters stood out as something not commonly found in English language books. On the plus side all of the pattern are both charted and completely written out. There is also a nice introduction to each family of stitches with historical references. There are a handful of projects that are more crafty then fashionable and a brief basic knitting techniques section.
When I purchased the book from Amazon it was 40% off and I'm not sure it was even worth that price.

Lovely Patterns with a Plethora of Great Stitches That I Can Use
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
This book includes a huge number of stitches that can be used on most any knitted project. There are textured stitches, twisted stitches, raised stitches, cable stitches, lace stitches, color work, and knitting techniques. Patterns are also included and some of them are just wonderful.
The Heirloom Baby Blanket is one that I will surely knit soon as I know a lot of expectant mothers. This will definitely be a blanket that a mother will cherish for her child. The Celtic Cardigan, while a little short, can be lengthened, which is what I plan to do. The cable pattern is very becoming. The Hap Shawl is lovely and easy lace knitting, a pattern I will surely knit. It looks like feather and fan but is even easier. The Children's Fair Isle sweater is darling and easy to knit. This will be another pattern I will tackle.
The only criticism I have of the book is that the photographs of the stitches could be more clear. They are not that easy to see and need to be sharper. Perhaps in the next printing this can be looked into. Other than that, I love this book. It is a wonderful resource for me with a plethora of great stitches that I can use.
