Still worth reading
By Schmerguls
Though this book was published in 1978, only three years after Vietnam fell to the Communists, this book says some insightful things about the war in Vietnam and makes many valid points. Lewy demonstrates the superficiality of the more extreme opponents of the war--those who accused the US of violating international law but were blind to the horrors involved in the actions of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. This is a well-researched and balanced study of the issues which engaged the interest of the world while the war was going on, and is illuminating and full of important information.

Still Standing
By Nicholas E. Sarantakes
A testament to the quality of this highly readable book is the fact that it is still in print thirty years after its initial publication. That is all the more impressive considering that Guenter Lewy began writing this book only a few months after the fall of Saigon. History normally requires the detachment and distance that time offers.

Lewy's central argument is that the United States failed in Vietnam because of the incompetence of its military. The person most responsible for this outcome was General William Westmoreland. Under Westmoreland, Americans sought out and engaged the North Vietnamese Army in big unit, fire-power intensive battles, ignoring pacification where Lewy and North Vietnamese General Vo Nguyen Giap believed the war was won and lost. The U.S. Army pursued this strategy out of ignorance, arrogance, and impatience. The Americans wanted to focus on what they did well--what are now called "kinetic operations," which is to say combat,--and ignored things at which take too long and required skills they did not possess--understanding the land, people, and history of Vietnam.

Although Lewy's overall argument is persuasive, putting the onus on Westmoreland is a bit unfair. The General never had command of U.S. Marine Corps or U.S. Air Force assets. Also, as Lewy points out, the flawed operational approach continued under Westy's successor General Creighton Abrams. Lewy also shows that there were several systemic issues that worked against the military. The caliber of officers diminished as the war progressed, because draft deferments allowed the "best and brightest" to avoid duty in Vietnam. The enlisted ranks also began to deteriorate. The heavy drug usage among soldiers was a product of the fact the military was taking more and more individuals who social misfits before they joined the service.

Lewy tackles a number of issue, many of which were and still are emotionally loaded. He dismisses arguments that the war was immoral. All wars are cruel and to focus on the suffering is beside the point. Atrocities happened, but they were never intentional on a large-scale basis. Then enemy had a dirtier record than the United States in this conflict. He also dismisses allegations that the military doctored intelligence reports. This issue became a bone of contention between Westmoreland and CBS News and led to his famous lawsuit in the early 1980s. These charges were floating around long before CBS reported them and Lewy calls them "unfounded," because the disputed figures did not reflect individuals that caught the United States off guard in the biggest surprise of the war, the Tet Offensive (p. 75.)

Despite all these problems, the United States came much closer to winning than most people think. Would pacification have worked? Obviously that is as question that no one can answer, but Lewy makes it clear that the U.S. effort was deeply flawed, and other approaches certainly appear to have had a better chance of victory than the one that was pursued.

Still one the best general studies of the Vietnam War
By S. Pollock
Lewy's history of the war in Indochina is balanced and judicious.

He is not an apologist for the war, but rather highly critical. He does, however, demolish the arguments of the Left that held the U.S. responsible for genocide, quasi-, de facto-genocide and war crimes as policy. He refutes these and other such claims in what are, in my opinion, perhaps the three most important chapters: "Military Tactics and the Law of War", "Terrorism, Counterinsurgency and Genocide", and "Atrocities: Fact and Fiction."

Lewy takes apart the assertions of the pro-Communist Left on their own terms, carefully citing international war crimes treaties and conventions, to show how such "legal experts" as Prof. Richard Falk have misinterpreted and ignored crucial sections of such conventions.

He studiously compiles statistics on many U.S. atrocities and in no way tries to downplay their severity. However, his study of NVA/VC show that terrorism was methodicol, highly organized and an integral part of Communist strategy. They "rallied" the "support" of the population through a major program of murder. 37,000 people (80% civilian - typically school teachers and other potential anti-Communist leaders at the village level) were killed. Individuals were tortured and disembowled in the town square as their family and friends were forced to watch. Such acts had the desired effect of terrorizing the peasants into passive support. While holding Hue for 26 days in 1968, the NVA murdered and kidnapped some 5,800 civilians (many of whom were buried alive). A favorite NVA tactic was to shell civilian areas of major cities and massive throngs of civilian refugees fleeing South.

The important distinction Lewy makes is that while American atrocities were perpetrated at the small-unit level by a few individuals who then tried to cover-up their crimes, Communist atrocities were official strategy, committed on a wide-scale. Those who committed them did not cover their tracks because they were in no danger of being penalized.

Lewy also carefully examines the existing data regarding the proportion of African-American casualties to the number of African-Americans of draft age; the level of drug use among US soldiers; the incidence of racial violence among US soldiers; and the social condition of Vietnam veterans. The results are very interesting. Some myths are demolished.

I don't mean to imply that the whole book is about war crimes and so forth. This is a general history that broadly asseses the major aspects of the war from the political to the military to the social.

This is one of the best general introductions to the war out there. Another excellent starting point, though less comprehensive and more polemical, is Podhoretz's "Why We Were In Vietnam."

A Classic for a Reason
By A Customer
A professor teaching my Open Channel Flow class stated that this book is widely regarded as "The Bible" of open channel hydraulics. After reviewing a library copy, I was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself. The text is written in a clear, concise language that is sorely lacking in other texts. His chapter on energy and momentum principles is especially good. Sure, it's an old text (1959) but 98% of this book is still relevant. There's a reason it still in print; engineers love it and continue to buy it!
Incidentally, I found the review of this book by Hubert Chanson to be at best, disingenuous. He rates the book with only one star (every other reviewer gave it 5 stars) while at the same time recommending a "better" text that he fails to mention he authored and is out of print! There's one in every crowd.

The Classic Text
By David B. Thompson
In the fall semester of 1980, I sat a class in the civil engineering department of the University of Missouri--Rolla on open channel hydraulics. The instructor used Chow's Open-Channel Hydraulics as the text. I was a dual-enrolled senior at the time and this course counted toward my graduate degree.

If it's possible to fall in love with an engineering textbook, I did -- with this one. I spent a lot of time with the text, both as a student, then later as a professional, then later yet as a teacher of young civil engineers. This has to be one of the best-written textbooks I've owned, ever. The writing is clear, lucid, and precise. Chow really knew his open channels, and it shows.

The text is clearly dated, hence the "classic reissues" monogram. The text contains material that is no longer useful, except in a historic sense. Much of the material presented on backwater-curve analysis is no longer used. Our computers are adept at applying the direct-step and standard-step methods (both topics are well-treated in the text), so the hand-computation methods are outdated. Furthermore, the technologies presented in the chapters describing unsteady flow in open channels are also dated because we have numerical computation methods more sophisticated than those available in the late 1950's.

Those topics are NOT what makes this an excellent textbook. It is the clear descriptions and derivations of fundamental principles that make Chow a classic. That material is timeless and remains the emphasis of my personal teaching of young engineers. Technologies change; fundamentals do not. For that reason alone I continue to use and recommend Chow's Open-Channel Hydraulics to my students and colleagues.

If I could have only one reference on open channels, this would be it. It is the book I return to and refer to whenever I need to know something about fundamental open channels. When I need newer technology, I go to the journal literature. But when I need to teach or review the fundamentals, I pick up my copy of Chow.

I want to affirm the comments of another reviewer that Chanson's review is subject to bias--he is the author of another open-channels text.

A must-have for hydraulic engineers
By A Customer
This is the foundational text of modern open-channel hydraulics. All engineers should have a copy. The only negative review on this page (or that I have ever heard) is by an author (Hubert Chanson) of books which compete with this one.

Simply put....Save your money. I bought this book thinking it was going to be a bio but, it wasn't. The facts were mostly taken from articles and interviews. If I were you I would spend the money on the book Anthony Kiedis' wrote 'Scar Tissue'.

A continuation of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, written in a similar manner. I dare to say that us who build fan websites do more than journalists who just come and pick what they need and then sell it for money. Information gathered by reading articles and transcribing interviews should not be repacked and sold.

Completed on:02/24/2016Review Rating:5 stars! Reviewed By Patricia Day for Readers' Favorite

Homeward Highway by Lewis B. Hunter follows the travels of Lester Eugene Oliver. The day his wife leaves him for another man propels Lester into an emotional dive. Never an extrovert, his pride suffers a hit below the belt, and he quickly realizes his life no longer appeals to him. Change is demanded, but he feels inadequate to determine what he should do. The day comes when he takes a step totally alien to him. He leaves everything behind, buys a Harley, and takes off with no particular destination planned. He just wants out! He wants to get rid of the awful empty feeling of unworthiness.

His journey leads him into various situations, some precarious and all amidst very colorful characters. Each one shows him a life that he could easily take on and those to avoid. What he learns along the way is that his life still has value, and he needs to determine where his trust should be given. He becomes more comfortable the further he travels, and eventually succumbs to a need to be back, to reconnect with his daughters at least.

Initially reading this story, I felt it was a book that only a male would enjoy. There are some segments where morals slide. However, the journey is not only for Lester to travel because the reader comes to know him too. Perhaps, like me, you will find him very likable and his inevitable choice of new friends is very acceptable. Lots of Southern charm, along with characters that would force anyone to make rapid decisions to keep their self-respect and values intact. A good story with some mature scenes and language.

Well written. Could be called The Journey of Self Discovery. The author knows motorcycles and touring. The people Leo meets along the way are mostly friendly and helpful, just like most of the people you meet on an actual tour. They are also interesting if you take the time like Leo did to listen to them.
I really liked the way the author described many of the roads that Leo traveled. I've been on many of them and the descriptions were accurate enough to bring back memories. The plot wasn't fantastic but it was believable and was low key overall with just enough excitement thrown in to keep things moving. Its easy to get into this book and just enjoy the ride.

By Murel Mize
I started out a little skeptical about the book because I have never rode a motor bike on a long trip. It became more interesting as each time I read greater lengths. Soon I became the character " Leo " and I could not put it down until I had finished the book. It was a great read that helped me understand some troubling parts of my life.

Far more than a simple motorcycle journey, it's a trip into the very best of becoming comfortable with who you are.
By Lakey Cornelius
I found this to be a very enjoyable and enlightening book. The characters are easy to relate to, and the main character Leo quickly becomes someone you identify with as he takes a long look at his past. I enjoyed the way the author makes some very reflective insights into who we are and how we became the people we are. Those realizations are perfectly balanced with humor and humility in the nature of the main character and the friends he made as he found himself on the journey. This turned out to be far more than a book about a motorcycle journey. It was a journey into the adventure of discovering yourself and how to allow yourself to relax and make the most of your relationships with family and friends.

Second Front: Censorship and Propaganda in the 1991 Gulf War, by John R. MacArthur

Now updated with a new preface that examines the current conflict in Iraq, this brilliant work of investigative reporting reveals the government's assault on the constitutional freedoms of the American media during Operation Desert Storm. John R. MacArthur's engaging and provocative account is as essential and alarming today as when the first paperback edition was published ten years ago.

It took guts...
By Amazon Customer
And that's a lot more than the press had in its coverage of Gulf War I: The Prequel. For those of us old enough to have survived the Vietnam Era, we can recollect that some military and intelligence types blamed the loss of that police action on the media. (Even in that era, I found the media to be pretty wishy washy, but they got much worse.) Volumes have been released--some even by the Pentagon--that dispute that claim, but it was popular among Establishment types who argued that the US can do no wrong.
Then there was Granada. That I recall because it was so transparently censored--while US medical students in Granada, the ones whose parents could afford to send them there after they'd been rejected by US med schools, were praising the military's arrival just in time, an obvious placement of the right message at the right time. I thought things couldn't get any worse than this. But then there was Panama...
Up to the present, Gulf War II, following the subject matter of the book, we've evolved to "embedded" journalists, i.e., media personnel accompanying the brave military in staged events to make Cecil B. DeMille jealous. The process and material of this "war" was provided by PR professionals!
This book documents a mid point in that process. And I remember it because I was frequently furious during Desert Storm that every local VFW chapter was called upon to comment while even major newspapers abstained from printing letters critical of the event!
There's a lot in this spectacular volume. The author begins with explaining how the media plan was designed, the "pooling" of journalists covering it, to the objection of few! There is a chapter on the dubious dead babies story (covered in some detail by "Weapons of Mass Deception" in which I heard of this book). The author distinguishes between the journalistic and business voices of the major media. There is even a chapter on Vietnam, to document some of the history to which I've already referred. And one appropriately entitles "Desert Muzzle," a pseudonym to which the author frequently returns.
There's a lot in the book. And be prepared to stay awake if you read it in bed. Lots will make you extremely mad, particularly the absolute gutlessness of some of the "journalists" on whom we rely for the limited information we receive and are allowed to process.
The bottom line is that, if we are to maintain any sense of "democracy," we need information provided by true journalists, not media personalities more intent on getting generals' autographs and invitations to expensive White House dinners than on one-sided, gutless coverage provided by Pentagon PR specialists. And that's all we have now. It's pathetic but true. This book documents it all. Read it and weep.
The book ends with a valuable observation: in the early 90s, just after the "liberation" of our wonderful ally, Kuwait, that little emirate ranked second, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), in its incarceration and torture of journalists. Second to China, which is only slightly more populous than Kuwait... Tough to be liberated.
If you want to begin to ponder where changes are needed, i.e., where honesty and integrity in media, prevail, this is a place to start.

He saw it coming
By James Levy
This is a good a useful look at the way news and information were managed in the first Gulf War (1990-91). It skewers the media for being more interested in "access" than in reporting anything remotely like the truth about what was going on. Newspaper editors and TV executives are exposed as men and women looking for "product", stuff they can sell that will go down easy with a population they fear and distrust. Like in 2003, they want a simple story line with a designated "good guy" and a designated "bad guy" and no history or context to confuse the narrative. This book should have been read and absorbed by the media, and would have been if they were interested in performing the criitcal watgchdog role of truth-tellers. Most of them, however, are more interested in not rocking the boat and being stenographers to power.

I wish I had read this earlier
By Robin Orlowski
During the Gulf War, I was an elementary schooler who eagerly bought the propaganda the government. my school district, and hometown were promoting in the name of patrotism.
I earnestly snapped up everything and anything having to do with the millitary, American Flags or Yellow Ribbons convinced that our side was the right side--and unlike the war in Vietnam, the reasoning for deployment was universally accepted by the American people. Although I now realize there were people voicing conciencious objection to war with Iraq (because among other reasons, we had once supported Saddam Hussein's rise to power including oulfiting his troops with weapons when it suited our international interests and did not seriously care what would happen to the people of Iraq afterwards), if given any coverage in the national news at all, they were riddiculouslsy marginalized as outcasts who were living in a gigantic timewarp and did not understand that this was the 1990's.
My parents, having lived through Vietnam, were more cynical about the millitary opperation--but did not challenge the advertising marketed towards their daughter for fear of being perceived as unsupportive of America's objectives. Because they realized that the Gulf War was fought partly over US Petroleum interests, support was actually a more complex issue than I was receiving from media, institutional, and peer socialization.
MacArthur and Bagdikian provide a wealth of information for anybody who wants to revisit this time in international/American history and uncover the truth that all too quickly disappeared and was ommitted in the name of national unity. The so-called "liberal-media" defered to government preferences and reporting angles in it's coverage of the Persian Gulf, reducing 20 years of profoundly complex relations in this region of the world to a binary presentation of "good guys v. bad guys". The ultimate loosers in this scenario of course are the American people who never get to see the full justifications of their leaders, policy makers and public officials.
Although we think of information suppression as something that was supposed to be eliminated with post-Vietnam millitary oversight procedures and policies, they continued during this event---in an albeit more subtle way. In the world of public policy, just because you cannot see something does not mean that it is non-existent.
Granted, looking at a gritter past may be hard, but this action is neccesary to fully understand how media and politics work together in times of war--and not necessarily for the benefit of the citizens at large. The timelieness of this scholarship is wholly appreciated and badly needed.
